Ayotte says she 'misspoke' when she said Trump is role model

Opponents of Republican U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte launched a new round of attacks Tuesday following a debate gaffe where she said she "absolutely" considers Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump a role model, a comment she later took back.

That conflict was on display from the debate stage, where she struggled at first to say whether she'd call Mr. Trump a role model, before concluding she could.

"Kelly Ayotte should explain to the people of New Hampshire exactly what about Donald Trump she thinks the children of New Hampshire should emulate", Sullivan said.

Finally, even if we accept Ayotte's second statement at face value, let's not overlook the oddity of the circumstances: a sitting Republican senator wants her party's national nominee to win the presidency, but she refuses to endorse him and she doesn't want kids to act like him. "But again, to the question".

The first-term senator was asked by a moderator during the NECN debate: "Would you tell them to be like Donald Trump?" "In the follow up, she said exactly what I think she meant". "I would tell a child to absolutely aspire certainly to be their best and aspire to be President", she said.

But just three hours after Monday night's debate, Team Ayotte backtracked, claiming she "misspoke". "While I hope that all children aspire to run for president, neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton have set a good example and I would not hold out either of them out as a role model for my children", she told reporters.

Trump took offense to Ayotte's slight and initially refused to endorse Ayotte, saying she offered him "zero support" in New Hampshire, where he beat Ohio Gov. John Kasich by a landslide in February. "But I have a lot of confidence that the people of New Hampshire are going to look at who's the best person to serve as their voice in the Senate and who will stand up for them no matter who's in the Oval Office".

"I've stood up to him on multiple occasions, whereas Gov. Hassan is in lockstep with Secretary Clinton", Ayotte said. Denise Coglin of Nashua said Ayotte can successfully clarify what she said and move on. "We need more prosecutions, to enforce our laws".

Hassan was quizzed about her "inability" to answer a question a recently about whether she feels Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is "honest and trustworthy". Distancing herself from Trump risks upsetting his supporters, but embracing him too tightly could alienate independents and Clinton voters, whom she will need for re-election. "I haven't heard major disagreements that she's had with Secretary Clinton so who's going to step up for the people of New Hampshire?" "And I've been quite clear about those disagreements".
