Mourinho completely trusts dropped Rooney

"He is a big player for me, a big player for Untied and a big payer for this country", Mourinho told Sky Sports.

Manchester United dismantled Premier League champions Leicester in a ruthless 20-minute burst as Jose Mourinho's decision to drop Wayne Rooney was rewarded with a 4-1 win at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Asked if Rooney had reacted when told he would be dropped, Smalling replied: "No".

"Wayne did not appear down".

"He was the same, as in before the game when we're all getting ready", the defender said of Rooney.

Demarai Gray pulled one back for the visitors with a stunning strike 14 minutes into the second half, but it turned out to be a mere consolation as United came away with the much-needed three points.

Mourinho went as far as to say Rooney had been damaged by over-the-top criticism in the aftermath of England's World Cup qualifier in Slovakia and the following day made the bold move to take his captain out of the starting line-up.

Rooney eventually came on with seven minutes left, replacing Rashford on the left wing. I think potentially there will be a little bit of relief for him, in the sense of the scrutiny around him in the last week.

Pogba, therefore, was pleased to show what he could do against Leicester as he was awarded the man of the match for playing a big part in the win which was the most comprehensive yet under Jose Mourinho.

Ibrahimovic so almost played in Rashford with an acute through ball, but former United youth-team goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler was quick off his line to gather. But there is one thing I know — the rules of the game.

"We thought today the way they defend, the profile of their defenders, we thought the best solution for us was to play with the two fast kids (wingers Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard) and with Mata in a position where he can interact with these young kids", Mourinho said.

"I think if we can start the game with that tempo, I think there's not many teams that can live with us".
