Ryder Cup 2016: Rickie Fowler wins US wildcard

Two-time major victor Bubba Watson missed out as United States captain Davis Love III named three of his four captain's picks for the Ryder Cup. I think Bubba is squarely in his sights, but he's waiting to see if anyone else shows up at the Tour Championship and does something extraordinary.

Matt Kuchar said he had heard Tiger Woods may be the final Ryder Cup pick for the United States.

"That's probably unrealistic but let's put ourselves in the best position to win as many of them as possible, and if we win seven out of 10 that's pretty good odds".

All three have Ryder Cup experience and are flexible in terms of pairings.

"I've been on a lot of teams with Matt (Kuchar)". It was a very, very tough decision.

"The rest of them aren't going to be any fun so, we're prepared for that".

Holmes, 34, known for his prodigious length off the tee, has made just one previous appearance for his country in the Ryder Cup, in 2008 when the US last tasted victory over Europe. "His strategy on the golf course. helping us prepare for a big golf tournament". He outranks the selected players in both categories - the three have a combined zero majors to Watson's two - and sits higher in the world ranking. "He's really confident on the big stage, brings a lot of intangibles".

Aggreko plc, is providing power generation and temperature control for the 2016 Ryder Cup, taking place September 27 - October 3 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.

"The Ryder Cup's a whole different animal and I'm looking forward to that opportunity". Holmes has played in one other Ryder Cup, and it was a resounding success.

Kuchar clearly struggled to get his Skype account working so he could join in on the call at one point referring to what was on his computer as "the world wide web". His Ryder Cup record is a less-than-stellar 0-4-4 but that such a small sample size that it could easily be fixed over the next two editions with good play.

Now that Fowler is confirmed, I expect Love will pick Watson for the last place, with Jim Furyk the only obvious alternative, unless someone comes from nowhere in the next fortnight. Holmes is now second on the PGA Tour in driving distance and is coming off of a top-four finish at the BMW Championship on Sunday.

Johnson won by three shots from England's US-based Paul Casey, who was not eligible for Europe's Ryder Cup team as he is not a member of his home tour. Casey never forgave Montgomerie or the European Tour, and he was ineligible to make this year's team as he plays only on the PGA Tour now.

It would be bold for the team to trust the 40-year-old coming off an extended layoff, but he is one of the best golfers of all time.
