Ohio poll: Donald Trump has narrow lead over Clinton

The poll also shows a widening gap between the senate candidates in OH, with incumbent Republican Senator Rob Portman polling at 53 percent and his opponent Democratic Governor Ted Strickland's at 37 percent.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is leading Democratic rival Hillary Clinton among likely voters in the key swing state of OH, according to the results of a new Bloomberg Politics poll. In Quinnipiac's previous presidential poll about three weeks ago, Clinton led Trump by 10 points. A Bloomberg Politics survey of OH voters released Wednesday morning found Trump ahead by five points, identical to the margin in this survey of OH voters, and Quinnipiac University surveys released shortly after Labor Day showed an even contest in Florida with Trump up four points in Ohio. Another 8 percent are planning to vote for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.

The remaining 5.36 percent were either undecided or supporting someone else.

It's a slight increase from July, when Clinton had a four-point lead.

Clinton has the edge on shared values (47% choose her, 41% Trump) and handling the responsibilities of being commander in chief (51% to 44%) while Trump is more often seen as honest and trustworthy (47% say Trump is, 40% Clinton, 12% neither).

In the Midlands, the race is much closer.

Trump led with men 50%-41%, while Clinton led with female voters 54%-36%. Bloomberg's survey, conducted by Selzer & Co., finds Trump ahead 44 percent to 39 percent among likely voters when third-party candidates are included, and up 48 percent to 43 percent in a head-to-head match with Clinton.

The poll surveyed 960 likely voters between September 8-13 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.

Despite those concerns, Mr Trump's predicted win in OH indicates the challenge that his rival faces in the "rustbelt states". "Priority one for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump as the election looms: lure the cynical, disaffected, downright disgusted electorate into their camp". About 53% see Trump as "strongly unfavorable" and 22% as "strongly favorable".

The survey in OH was conducted with a random sample of 1,006 adults, including 769 likely voters; in Florida, 1,033 adults were selected randomly for the poll, with 788 of them likely voters.
