Those difficulties have led Rosberg to predict that Mercedes can not head into this year's race confident of beating Red Bull and Ferrari, despite winning every race in which at least one of its cars has finished so far this season.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is curious to know whether his team has fixed the problems it suffered at the Singapore street circuit past year.

The Briton heads into the weekend with a two-point lead over Nico Rosberg, who won the last race in Italy.

Now, the F1 circus kick starts the Asian flyaway races starting this weekend at the Marina Bay circuit, here in Singapore.

"When you go to all the races it's anyone's to lose, and it's not until you get there when you realise the pace of one vehicle to another". "But I have faith in the team and my belief in myself is as high as ever".

Despite winning all but one race in 2016, team boss Toto Wolff still thinks Mercedes will face a tough weekend in Singapore.

"So in Singapore we are going to check whether our assumptions were right".

"We've got a lot more work ahead to get ourselves in a good position during practice, to qualify well and then to have a strong race".

"We now have to get the ball over the line in both Championships while remaining conscious that next year is a very different challenge", he said. "We are curious and excited to see how it goes". We didn't manage it previous year and, although we believe we now understand why, only performance on the racetrack can prove our conclusions right. Of course, we haven't been able to test on the circuit, so all of our theories are just theories at this stage.

Mercedes heads to Singapore unsure whether it has solved the problems which caused such a downturn in performance a year ago, where both drivers failed to make the front two rows and the podium.

“I dont believe in much, but if there is a little bit of karma or whatever, Id like to think I will get my Monaco win back somewhere and Singapore is a track which I will look to, ” he told AAP.

"I think we've shown on circuits and previous circuits the power is not. we're not too far off now, so we thought that used to be like 80-20 [engine-chassis ratio] this year I think the chassis is pretty much there, the power we've halved the gap". But we love a challenge and are looking forward to it.
