Followers express hope of world peace with Mother Teresa's Canonization

26, 1910, Teresa came to India in 1929 as a sister of the Loreto order.

In most cases, two miracles are required to become a saint. "So I went down and picked up Mother Teresa, and she looked at me and said Father, can I have your blessing?"

Sanjay Sarkar, a local high school student, said it was a special day for the city.

"Tomorrow we will have the joy of seeing Mother Teresa proclaimed a saint", the Argentinian pontiff said yesterday.

"Mother Teresa, in all aspects of her life, was a generous dispenser of divine mercy", the Pope said in his homily before the more than 100,000 people overflowing Saint Peter's Square, "making herself available for everyone through her welcome and defense of human life, those unborn and those abandoned and discarded".

In 1994, Mr Hitchens and the British Pakistani journalist Tariq Ali produced an extremely critical documentary on Mother Theresa titled "Hell's Angel". "She was like a loving and caring mother who always smiled and asked others to be happy".

He added: "She made her voice heard before the powers of the world, so that they might recognize their guilt for the crimes of poverty they themselves created".

Hundreds of Missionaries of Charity sisters in their trademark blue-trimmed saris had front-row seats at the Mass, sitting under a searing hot sun and blue skies alongside 1,500 homeless people and 13 heads of state or government, including Queen Sofia of Spain. For the homeless, Francis offered a luncheon afterward in the Vatican auditorium, catered by a Neapolitan pizza maker who brought his own ovens for the event.

For Francis, Mother Teresa put into action his ideal of the church as a merciful "field hospital" for the poorest of the poor, those suffering both material and spiritual poverty. The low turnout suggested that financial belt-tightening and security fears in the wake of Islamic extremist attacks in Europe may have kept pilgrims away. Those fears prompted a huge, 3,000-strong law enforcement presence to secure the area around the Vatican and close the airspace above.

Speaking from the steps of St. Peter's Basilica, Francis said St. Teresa spent her life "bowing down before those who were spent, left to die on the side of the road, seeing in them their God-given dignity".

Mumbai: To celebrate the canonisation of Mother Teresa as a saint, IndiaPost on Sunday released a commemorative postage stamp on her.

"It's so handsome", said a crying Sister Anna Maria Mendez, 56, one of the almost 5,000 members of the Missionaries of Charity religious order Mother Teresa founded in 1950. "The peace and content that can be seen on their faces is so wonderful", said one of the followers of Mother Teresa.

She departed the world on September 5, 1997, said a statement.

Known as the "Saint of the Gutters", the Roman Catholic nun devoted her life to helping the poor, the sick, and the marginalized.

The Polish cleric was a personal friend of Teresa and as the pope at the time of her death, he was responsible for her being beatified in 2003.

The prime minister had praised the nun, who became a global icon because of her work with the dying and destitute of Kolkata, in that edition of his monthly-radio address.
