Paralympic Games open to theme: 'Heart knows no limits'

Equestrian Lee Pearson, who led ParalympicsGB into the arena, described the ceremony as "amazing", adding: "Now let's crack on with the Games and show the world what we can do".

After the IPC imposed a blanket ban on all Russian athletes for alleged state-sponsored doping, the country decided it would host its own Games, much like it did for its banned Olympic athletes.

Musicians perform during the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Paralympic games at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016.

Over 80 Paralympians were affected by the IPC's ban and Russian Federation will host its alternate Games on September 8 and 9 outside of Moscow, over 7,000 miles away from Rio.

The scandal cost Russian track and field athletes an appearance at the Rio 2016 Olympics and has called into question Russian results spanning several Olympic games.

The Paralympic Games have opened in Rio de Janeiro.

The ceremony concluded with the lighting of the Paralympic cauldron by Brazilian Paralympic swimmer Clodoaldo Silva.

The RPC president added: "We are all sending our honest greetings to the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro since we are all brothers and sisters and in the Paralympic family and wish that the Games there will be good".

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia's Foreign Ministry, called the Belarusian delegate who held up the flag a "hero" during her daily briefing Thursday, state news agency Itar-Tass reported.

"All the teams will be here", Craven said.

Spectators also booed the Rio 2016 organizing committee president Carlos Nuzman at the city's Maracana stadium.

Temer opened the games officially and, as he was in the Olympics when he was only the acting president, was jeered by fans chanting "Fora Temer" — Out Temer.
