Sachin Tendulkar, Narendra Modi and others congratulate Deepa Malik

Bagging a silver in women's shot put at Rio 2016 Paralympics on September 12, Haryana girl Deepa Malik became the first Indian woman to win a medal at the global multi-sport event. Deepa's success comes after two Indian men - high jumpers Mariyappan Thangavelu and Bhati Varun Singh - won gold and bronze respectively at the Olympic Stadium on Friday. Deepa will receive a cash award of rupees four crore under the Haryana Sports Scheme for her feat.

Deepa, who received the Arjuna award in 2012, is a paraplegic, paralysed from the waist down.

Rahul Gandhi also used twitter to congratulate Deepa on her achievement.

Deepa with a best throw of 4.61 metres from six attempts, finished behind Bahrain's Fatima Nedham's 4.76 metres effort.

"So, we all are feeling really great and it is all because of hard work of Deepa Malik".

Deepa has thus confirmed India's third medal from the Paralympic Games.

Deepa Malik with her silver medal. In an interview with Tehelka, she had said "People write me off because I'm an upper middle class colonel's wife, because my story isn't one of poverty and because I'm in my 40s". While prizes and accolades have poured in from all corners of the country, it is yet to be seen if the government takes steps towards the training and promotion of these sports persons for the biggest events of the year.

That's not all. In 2008, Deepa created another record when she swam the Yamuna for a kilometre upstream.

The 46-year-old athlete has also won medals in swimming at worldwide competitions. "My goal was to become independent despite my disability and today due to sport and the support of my family, I am very much an independent individual", Malik told Mirror from Brazil.

In 2013, she completed the longest drive [Chennai-Delhi - 3,278 km] by a paraplegic, making it to the Limca book.

Deepa is also a champ in swimming, javelin throw and regularly conducts motivational classes.
