Kenyan police kill 3 women who attacked police station

Three female suspected terrorists were shot dead in an attack on a Kenyan police station Sunday, police said.

An unnamed police officer told BBC the women "were definitely on a mission". Police shot the three and killed them.

Police also recovered an unexploded suicide vest from one of the attackers, spokesman George Kinoti said in a statement.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Patterson said suspicion was falling on Al-Shabaab, an Islamist group in neighboring Somalia which has repeatedly carried out terror attacks on Kenyan soil.

As one of the police was interrogating them, one woman tried to enter one of the doors leading to inner offices but a policeman stopped her.

The fire was extinguished and the police station sealed off and guarded by heavily armed police as an investigation into the incident begins.

A witness said three women, who walked into the station pretending to report a stolen phone, brandished knives after they were barred from accessing the cells with one throwing a petrol bomb in an attempt to burn down the station.

According to Reuters, a woman who had sheltered the perpetrators the night before the attack have been arrested.

This is the second attack linked to extremism on a police station this year.

Two cops have reportedly been injured.

Al-Shabab has recruited hundreds of Kenyans, especially around Mombasa which has a large Muslim population. Al-Shabaab says the attacks are in retaliation to Kenyan troops in Somalia.

Authorities fear IS is trying to establish a presence in Kenya, East Africa's biggest economy and telecommunications and transport hub.
