UKIP European Parliament member Steven Woolfe out of hospital after 'altercation'

Nathan Gill, a UKIP colleague who had visited Woolfe in the hospital in Strasbourg on Friday, had said that Woolfe was exhausted of French croissants and wanted to return home for a full English breakfast.

UK Independence Party legislator Steven Woolfe has been discharged from a French hospital following an altercation with another senior party member. "His condition is serious".

However, a spokesman for 62-year-old Mr Hookem denied a physical fight took place, telling the MailOnline: "Mike did not touch him".

Woolfe claims fellow MEP Mike Hookem "landed a blow" on him as tempers flared at a UKIP meeting in Strasbourg on Thursday.

The MEP, Ukip's spokesperson on defence issues, is reported to be standing by his version of events and taking legal advice.

UKIP has released a statement from Mr Woolfe in which he said he was now able to sit up having undergone a brain scan as a precaution.

Mr Hookem replied to the claim by saying: "I am now disputing everything Steven Woolfe is saying".

"I was backed up because my colleague Paddy O'Flynn said, "No, sorry Steven, you were the one that instigated this, you were the one that stood up and said let's take this outside mano-a-mano".

"It was a meeting created to patch things up", the source said, adding that colleagues present at the meeting said one MEP became "quite vocal" with Woolfe, prompting an altercation outside of the meeting room.

Woolfe reportedly seemed well immediately after the altercation, but collapsed later after casting a vote in Parliament.

"It's two grown men getting involved in an altercation". He could not stand in the previous leadership election after he was barred by the party's NEC for missing the form submission deadline.

Woolfe collapsed a little while later inside the parliament building in Strasbourg.

"I think as a conclusion of that investigation the party will consider whether disciplinary measures are appropriate and that might have implications for Steven Woolfe's candidacy".

The confrontation threatens to further damage the reputation of the party which is locked in a leadership crisis following the resignation of Ms James, just 18 days after she was elected to the post.
