NC bishop to lead Catholic Diocese of Arlington, Virginia

Pope Francis has named Bishop Michael F. Burbridge, a Cardinal O'Hara and Villanova almunus, to be the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington, Va.

Diocese of Arlington: I am honored to be your new bishop and will love and serve you with the strength that comes from God.

Bishop Burbidge said he felt it was appropriate that his appointment was announced on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, as he was his Confirmation saint and the inspiration of our Holy Father, as well the namesake of several members of his family. He'll officially take leadership at a Mass of Installation to be held December 6. He earned a doctorate and multiple master's degrees from Catholic universities, taught in high schools and served as dean of students in a Philadelphia-area seminary and took on leadership positions in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia before becoming the Raleigh bishop.

The changes were announced in Washington Oct. 4 by Msgr.

Bishop Burbidge was ordained to the priesthood in 1984.

A North Carolina bishop has been selected to lead the Catholic Diocese of Arlington, Virginia.

Asked about his vision for his new diocese, Bishop Burbidge said, "The answer can only be developed upon listening and learning".

"Some priorities are the same for all dioceses", he said.

He will be Diocesan Administrator for the Diocese of Raleigh until then.

He described Bishop Burbidge as a man of integrity, who teaches the truths of the faith with clarity and joy.

Fran Burbidge, the bishop's older brother, drove from his home in Philadelphia to attend the news conference and show his support.

The Arlington Diocese was founded in 1974 and covers the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fredericksburg, Manassas, Manassas Park and Winchester, as well as 21 counties in Northern Virginia and down to Richmond.
