Brandt Snedeker in contention in Fiji International

The 35-year-old American, who finished 3-0 in the United States' triumph over Europe in Minnesota, shot a four-under 68 at the Natadola Bay Golf Course to finish with a 16-under total of 272, leaving New Zealander Michael Hendry a distant runnerup.

"I regret that I will be unable to come home to Australia this year", Day said in a statement. He opened with rounds of 69, 64 and 70 to take a three-stroke lead into the final round. "I birdied the first hole out of the gate", said Snedeker.

In a controlled, committed exhibition, Snedeker distanced himself from the field quickly in the final round then cruised to the clubhouse on a wave of safe pars to raise a trophy outside North America for the first time.

While Snedeker ran away with the tournament New Zealand's Michael Hendry continued what has been an impressive year in Japan by climbing to outright second in Fiji.

The world No 23 shot a flawless seven-under-par 65 to finish the day one shot behind Australia's Matthew Giles heading into the weekend at the tournament, which is co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Australasian PGA. "So, I just hit the tee shot and hit the second shot and just kept going from there".

The 10-time PGA Tour victor was planning on returning home to play in the November 23-27 event at the Kingston Heath course for the first time since he and countryman Adam Scott won the event in 2013.

Snedeker said it had been a very good two weeks for him. "There's a lot of pressure on those guys to perform and their careers are riding on how they are playing right now", Snedeker said.

A first victory outside North America helped erase some scars from that '07 Australian Open, where a late, self-imposed penalty cruelled his chances, and the embarrassing missed cut at the Australian PGA last December.

A further shot back were Brad Shilton (NZ), Andrew Evans (NSW), Matthew Giles (NSW), and Anthony Houston (Vic).

Singh was tied for 36th at 1 over after a 72.

Three-times major victor Vijay Singh finished joint 21st at three-under for the tournament in his homeland.
