'President Barack Obama was born in the United States - period'

Then she referred to the transition in 2008 with a dig at Trump for questioning whether Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. "Now we all want to get back to making America strong and great again". Only after that did Trump make a brief statement about Obama's birth.

Meanwhile, as Trump's campaign sought to put that false conspiracy theory to rest, it stoked another: saying the "ugly incident" known as the birther movement was started by Hillary Clinton. See here and here and here.

Despite his statement Friday, Trump did not apologize for stirring the controversy, and Clinton blasted him on Twitter.

Trump has changed his position on a lot of things over the years.

The war is on between the mainstream media and Donald Trump. "I finished it", Trump said in Washington, D.C., on September 16. It's something Republican former Secretary of State Colin Powell called, in hacked emails, "racist".

The ongoing "birther" saga is one that's spanned years, going back to 2011, when Trump very publicly embraced the conspiracy theory about the country's first African-American president. Regardless, Trump - who previously had counted his ability to build an ice rink as his greatest political achievement - took credit for going Nancy Drew on a mystery so complex it was already solved before he discovered it. Trump didn't stop there, though, convinced he could find a piece of paper somewhere that would prove our nation's first black president did not belong in the White House. Obama lampooned Trump at that year's White House Correspondents' Dinner, as a stone-faced Trump looked on.

The Republican nominee's persistent birtherism is a significant reason why polls show he has almost zero support among African-American voters. A 2010 Washington Post-ABC News poll found 20 percent saying Obama was born in another country while 77 percent said he was born in the United States.

Trump's comments speculating on Obama's birthplace have been seen by many as an attempt to delegitimize the nation's first black president, and have turned off numerous African-American voters he is now courting in his bid for the White House.

In the last 24 hours, Trump talked "wellness" and fast food with Dr. Oz-which the campaign billed as a serious and transparent disclosure of his medical records.

"You questioned his citizenship during his campaign, and you said afterwards if he produced that long-form birth certificate, you'd produce your tax returns. I just wanted to know if there's something that we can do that's not presidential, really, that we can do now that we're both civilians".

But while his top surrogates are circulating assertions that Trump has dropped any birther beliefs, the Republican nominee still refuses to say the words, and is keeping the issue alive.

Trump's response to his campaign manager's comments in the Post invterview: "It's OK - she's allowed to speak what she thinks".

"Here's what I've learned about this job: First and foremost, this job is hard. I want to focus on other things".

During the 2012 election cycle, Trump repeatedly called on Obama to release his birth certificate to prove that he was born in the US.

Democratic candidate returns to campaign trail as Trump campaign says he "believes President Obama was born in the US". He added, "The president should come clean".

The right time was apparently the next day, five years - that's right, years - after Obama had released his long-form birth certificate. In an October 2011 interview with CNN, Trump said that if "you check out the Internet, many people say it is not real". At a Black Women's Agenda Symposium workshop on Friday, Clinton said: "The good news is my pneumonia finally got Republicans interested in women's health".

For his part, Obama, who asked by a reporter for his reaction during an Oval Office meeting on trade, seemed bemused.

"I'll answer that question at the right time", Trump said.

Then he paused and smirked.

"Well, Im not that shocked actually". I was pretty confident about where I was born.

"That's his decision. He should do what's best for himself and the American people", Epshteyn said.
