Kolkata celebrates canonisation of Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa is remembered for her charitable work, primarily with the poor in Calcutta.

Pope Francis is offering some 1,500 homeless people a pizza lunch at the Vatican after Mother Teresa's canonisation Mass. Critics of the Nobel Peace Prize victor says her charity isn't financially accountable and lacks medically trained personnel.

Saint Teresa's journey to canonization is shorter than most.

The pope, on Sunday, celebrated the new saint in a way that would bring together both those who champion the church's traditional moral teachings and those who lean more toward social justice concerns, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Held at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City, a huge applause broke out from the audience as Pope Francis began the ceremony - with a portrait of Mother Teresa hanging on display from the Basilica. Not only the sisters who are in contact but all kinds of religion - even the people who did not believe in God - when they come in contact with Mother, something happens to them because she's so tender, so loving.

"She is a great example", said Pastor Diaz.

Pope Francis today proclaimed Mother Teresa of Kolkata a saint, hailing her as the personification of maternal love and a powerful advocate for the poor.

She was born Agnes Gonxha in 1910 to Albanian Parents, in modern day Macedonia.

"The canonization of a Saint is the recognition of the holiness of her life", said Pastor Diaz.

An estimated 120,000 people filled St. Peter's Square for the canonization ceremony, fewer than half the number who turned out for her 2003 beatification. Setting up the Missionaries of Charity order, she made a decision to devote her entire life to the depriving masses.

Another group of 100 drove from Kosovo toting a banner that read: "Mother Teresa: Pray for Us". "I am very grateful for this miracle", said Marcilio Haddad Andrin.

After doing iconic work in the slums of Calcutta (now Kolkata) that won universal acclaim, she died in 1997 at the age of 87.
