From book to film: 'Bridget Jones' returns-and with a baby

Fifteen years after British writer Helen Fielding's klutzy diarist first popped up on movie screens, she resurfaces in a scenario that renders her endearing indeed.

At first, it sounds like a stretch: "Bridget Jones's Baby"?

'Bridget Jones's Baby, ' with Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey, Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones, Emma Thompson.

Something else that has changed since we last saw Bridget is the centrality of social media, which Zellweger stays well away from. Bridget also holds a steamy night with billionaire Jack Quant, played by newcomer Patrick Dempsey, whom she meets at a music festival. You don't have to be charming.

The answer presented by Bridget Jones's Baby: Give her different problems. (Can't say how, but it is amusing.) Bridget attends Glastonbury where Jack rescues her from a pratfall in the mud and she sleeps with him but two weeks later she bumps into Darcy, who confesses he has split from his wife, and she sleeps with him too. Bridget Jones, as both a character and romcom juggernaut, shouldn't be faulted for celebrating this pursuit. While the dirtier jokes aren't equally as amusing, it's such a breath of fresh air to see a film find room for both in an R-rated parameter. However as the third film in the chick-flick franchise, Bridget Jones's Baby is a welcome exception to my rule. As with any old friend who you love dearly, witnessing her journey towards happiness and fulfillment - and of course laughing at all of the hilarious incidents along the way - is something special and a ride not to be missed.

The new Bridget Jones film, released tomorrow, sees the perennial singleton in her forties, pregnant, and unsure who the daddy is - brooding Mark Darcy, her former love interest, or the dashing American who has entered her life? You can bet that there will be at least one occasion in which Bridget's rear end is embarrassingly the center of everyone's attention, and that she will babble her way ineptly through some public speaking occasion. At this point, is not the case anymore of which type of guy would suit Bridget better as her life companion as she won't be able to pick and choose.

Speaking of cute and hilarious, Bridget herself is still a breath of fresh air as a character. Contrast that with the hard-bitten career woman that is the typical lead in romantic comedies such as Mila Kunis's role in "Friends with Benefits", or Natalie Portman's in "No Strings Attached".

Years & Years have teased their new single "Meteorite", which frontman Olly Alexander says is "unashamedly disco". "I wanted to know whether their fantasies had come true".

(CNN) - Renee Zellweger sees aspects of herself in the lovingly awkward character of Bridget Jones. Bridget has a lot of catching up to do, and the film never once feels forced in into its assimilation into 2016. After a gallant Jack has pulled Bridget out of a massive mud puddle, he digs her lost shoe from the muck, fits it on her foot and declares, "It fits!" before Bridget, as a red-faced Cinderella, flees without a word.

We just didn't want to grow up.
