International Space Station's 'One Year Crew' Returns to Earth
Kelly returned to Earth on Wednesday after an unprecedented year in space for NASA, landing in barren Kazakhstan with a Russian cosmonaut who shared his whole space station journey.
"Scott Kelly's one-year mission aboard the International Space Station has helped to advance deep space exploration and America's Journey to Mars", Nasa administrator Charles Bolden in a statement.
"It's just an unbelievable feeling to be back here on planet Earth", Kelly said during a speech when he got off the plane in Houston. "But for him it's been a long time, but it's great that he made it back safe", said friend Robert Tijerina.
Kelly and Kornienko have been aboard the space station for 340 days, about twice as long as previous crews.
Trump and Clinton win big
A reporter asked about criticism he'd received from Republican leaders in Congress, including House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). First up though, another round of voting this weekend, with Democratic contests on Saturday in Kansas, Louisiana and Nebraska.
For nearly a year, Scott Kelly did not have to use his legs to walk, but instead floated to different areas of the space station. "The thing I like about it is doing something I feel very, very strongly about".
On Thursday, Kelly and Kornienko were welcomed home with smiles, congratulations and even apple pie by dignitaries and family members in Houston, Texas and Star City, Russia respectively. The hope is that data collected from the two men will highlight some of the most worrying physiological and psychological hurdles to spending months or years in space - allowing scientists to tackle those problems before NASA attempts a long-haul flight to Mars or the planets beyond.
Kelly greets Dr. Jill Biden and the President's science advisor John Holdren.
Kelly and Kornienko have spent 340 consecutive days in space. The world record of 438 days was set by a Russian doctor during the mid-1990s.
'Miraculous' cache of 7 century-old baseball cards found
At first, he doubted the authenticity of the cards because finding seven at once is "almost impossible". Before this find, there were about 15 of the rare Ty Cobb cards known to still exist, Orlando said .
While Kelly reported on some oddities that happened to his body while he was up there, one of the changes he underwent is interesting but not all that unusual: He grew 2 inches in height.
Kelly heads to Houston with two flight surgeons and several other NASA reps, arriving late last night. Both Kelly brothers served as guinea pigs for an eventual Mars mission, one in space and one on the ground.
The exams - along with blood, saliva and urine collections - will continue for weeks if not months.
When his long voyage home is finally complete, Kelly plans to "go home and jump in my pool".
Hubble spots farthest known galaxy in universe
Astronomers measured the distance to the galaxy, known as GN-z11, by splitting its light up into its component colours. And for GN-z11 to be that visible it would have to be three times brighter than typical galaxies, he said in an email.
JUDY WOODRUFF: All I can say is wow. Throughout his mission, Scott Kelly has circled the Earth more than 5,400 times, traveling 143 million miles and witnessed thousands of sunrises, sunsets and other incredible views.
