United States election 2016: Mitt Romney warns against 'phony' Trump

Speaking March 3 at the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute of Politics in Salt Lake City, former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney warned against voting for Donald Trump.

"His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University", Romney plans to say in a speech, according to excerpts released by his office.

If Trump does indeed become the GOP nominee, party leaders have no one to blame but themselves.

Mr Romney was relentless in his criticism, saying Mr Trump "is not the temperament of a stable, thoughtful leader". If Trump wins the nomination, he said, it could be a dose of reality for naysayers and more leaders could line up behind him. "I - like many others - have been very concerned about a lot of the comments coming out of Donald Trump's mouth", he said.In an email, U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello said it's too early to consider who he'd support for president.

"I'm going to be a good president for the world, but we have a country that's in big trouble".

Trump is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination with more state wins and more delegates than any other GOP contender.

Trump, a 69-year-old NY real estate tycoon, proclaimed himself a "unifier" on Tuesday night after he won seven states from centrist MA to the conservative Deep South in the contests to pick a party nominee.

Trump has shown he can win big in a wide variety of states, he said.

"I think he has conceded afterward that was probably not the right move", Baier said of Trump, "and maybe cost some votes in Iowa".

"One of the reasons the first debate was so dynamic was because we opened up with a 10 for each candidate", said Kelly, explaining that the moderating team was trying to probe "the Achilles" heel" of each candidate and get them to respond. For instance, Trump seemingly out of nowhere reminded rally-goers that "I have a store that's worth more money than Mitt", referring to his Gucci store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan - a claim the Des Moines Register, after some speculation, eventually corroborated.

Many Republicans fear Mr Trump would lose November's presidential election.

She did not mention her Democratic rival, Bernie Sanders, or any Republicans by name, but decried that the rhetoric from the GOP side "had never been lower". Fox will concentrate its questions on Trump, Cruz and Marco Rubio - making for potentially awkward moments for Kasich. It takes 1,237 delegates to win the party nomination.

Arizona senator John McCain, the losing Republican nominee in 2008, issued a statement endorsing Mr Romney's remarks. He has won 46% of the delegates awarded so far, and he would have to increase that to 51% in the remaining primaries.

Mr Trump said Mr Romney begged for his backing and he could have "said, 'Mitt, drop to your knees.' He would have dropped to his knees".

This is the 11th debate for the Republican party candidates and Cruz, Rubio, and Kasich are running out of time if they want to take down front-runner Trump.

Surrounded by American flags and his slogan "Make America Great Again", Mr Trump told a packed room of supporters in Maine: "He [Romney] failed badly".
