Adam Johnson: Police say Sunderland was told of child sex act claim

Allardyce told a news conference Johnson would have to accept whatever punishment was handed down for his sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.

Justifying giving him bail, the judge said: "You can say goodbye to your daughter". He is facing a prison sentence and the end of his playing career. Johnson, 28, showed no emotion as the verdicts were delivered.

The detective told the BBC: "At the centre of this we have a 15-year-old girl who was an avid Sunderland fan and a massive fan of Adam Johnson, she describes him as her idol, she'll want to know why he was allowed back on the pitch".

While it was in charge, former Ireland global footballer Niall Quinn became its chairman.

Adam Johnson's victim said in her written statement that she had "lost all her confidence".

"It's been the hardest year of my life and I've had to face so much abuse after he claimed his innocence".

During the trial "jurors heard Johnson's admission that, during a meeting on 4 May previous year, he told Byrne he had kissed the girl and exchanged messages with her", reports the paper.

He eventually agreed to meet her to sign football shirts, but it was when they met for a second time that he asked for a "thank you kiss".

Johnson also admitted kissing the minor during his initial trial, however, he denied two serious sexual activity allegations against him, Reuters reported.

The Football Association criticised the behaviour of former England player Johnson and expressed its sympathy for his victim.

The jury cleared Johnson of the count relating to oral sex but found him guilty on a majority of 10-2 on the count relating to the digital penetration. Mr Johnson has admitted in evidence that he changed his plea "on legal advice". There were scuffles involving police, Johnson's entourage and photographers. Johnson's girlfriend at the time, Stacey Flounders, was "heavily pregnant" with their first child when the soccer star began his online friendship with the teen.

She said: "If that's true, then at that point they definitely should have suspended him because in allowing him to continue to play, tens of thousands of fans and lots of other people thought, "Oh well, the club is still letting him play, the case against him can't be very good, he probably is innocent".

Meyer's daughter, Amelia, said that she was, and so her mother followed up, asking the 8-year-old why she felt that way. As part of her special project, Amelia was greeted by a police procession and hundreds of volunteers at Swope Park.

"I think if I had to say anything on the players, it's that they feel let down if anything".

Allardyce said he had no knowledge that the player was guilty and felt "let down" by his behaviour.

"The main question hanging over all of this for me is, I don't think the statement from Sunderland football club answers all of the questions that we need answering".

Sunderland said in a statement on Wednesday night that they had been under the impression Johnson would plead not guilty to all four child sex offence charges against him. He will be sentenced at a later date.
