Kanhaiya released from Tihar, reaches JNU campus

Two other students are also accused of being among the organisers of the JNU event and have been arrested on the same sedition charge as Kumar. The arrested students of New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University are facing sedition charges following protests where anti-India slogans were allegedly shouted.

Delhi Police kept claiming that they had irrefutable evidence that Kanhaiya Kumar had raised anti-national slogans but failed to come up with the evidence in the court, weakening their case.

The protest march which will be joined by academicians and students from various universities across Delhi, will begin from Mandi House area at 2 p.m today.

Das, who is with the Centre for English Studies, said the JNU community "must not give up until students are safe inside and outside the campus".

JNU professor Aditya Mukherjee spoke about the Judge trying to invoke the sentiment of putting the armed forces against the students, saying, "Pitting armed forces against students is bad".

It maintains that though the university administration identified a few people who were heard shouting the slogans, their whereabouts were yet to be determined and their role investigated.

Kumar and the persons accompanying him were instructed to reach Hari Nagar police station near Tihar jail, from where he was provided with an escort comprising officials of Delhi Police's west district. "No witness or video is available to me to support allegations against him", says the report. "The FIR admits that police personnel were present during the event in civil dress, and later on uniformed personnel were sent inside the campus to present any violent clashes", reads the report.

The AAP government, however, took different stand in which it urged the court to grant him bail.

He had been in judicial custody in the capital's Tihar jail since February 17.

"In view of the sensitivity and gravity of the matter, a sharp vigil by local police is recommended to avoid any untoward incident", he said.

Further, the court said Delhi Police Special Cell, which has taken over the investigation, has to ascertain whether Kanhaiya's February 11 speech contained his original thoughts and faith in the Constitution and nationalist approach, or the speech was to create a "safety gear for himself" for the February 9 incident.

As news of Kanhaiya Kumar's bail broke out among students, the campus started the celebrations.
