Rudd 'close to deal' to save refugee children from Jungle

Over 100 unaccompanied refugee children have a legal right to be reunited with family in the U.K. But the Red Cross says British officials have refused to respond to requests to bring them in.

She said the government will then act "with all urgency".

"We are committed to working together to strengthen the security of our shared border (and) to strongly diminish the migratory pressure in Calais", they said in a joint statement.

They said that "we are now just days away from the start of the full demolition of the Calais camp" and that "the time to act is now".

Far from the crowded "Jungle" camp in Calais, where migrants try to smuggle themselves aboard trucks bound for Britain, hundreds more are risking their lives to enter the other end of France from northern Italy.

French authorities announced last month that the camp will be shut in the coming weeks, but there are now no provisions for the 1,022 unaccompanied minors living in the camp.

According to Italy's interior ministry, about 124,500 migrants have arrived since the start of 2016, just slightly more than the 122,000 recorded for the whole of a year ago.

"We will take children who have a right to be here", she told MPs in the House of Commons.

Mary Jones, who is responsible for a charity-run restaurant that provides free warm food for the children in the camp, told IBTimes UK British authorities need to take immediate action regarding minors with links to the UK.

Miss Rudd said French bureaucracy had prevented unaccompanied children in Calais from being brought to the UK.

The London meeting will address the closure of the slum-like camp in Calais that's become a flashpoint in Europe's migrant crisis.

Mr Cazeneuve said: 'Britain is the country of human rights and so it has to take on its responsibilities.

In a sign of the continuing difficulties around Calais, a British driver was involved in an accident which killed an Eritrean migrant and left his wife injured.

"Last month, charities handed Rudd a list of 387 refugee children eligible to come to Britain - 178 under the Dublin Regulation and another 209 under the Dubs amendment". She added that "we should transfer as many minors as possible" before the dismantling of the camp, which begins next week.

Labour MP Alison McGovern said: "May I draw the Home Secretary's attention to the question from the honourable member for North Wiltshire about a taskforce?"

Senior religious figures have urged the PM to allow almost 400 refugee children into the United Kingdom before the "Jungle" migrant camp near Calais is demolished.
