Ambulance service treats 26 people after London City Airport evacuated

A "chemical incident" at the London City airport on Friday prompted evacuation of hundreds of passengers and staff from the premises, also causing sickness to 26 travellers and shutdown of flights in and out of the hub.

Medical teams were rushed to the airport and treated nearly 30 people, two of whom were taken to a local hospital.

The incident came shortly after police said on Friday they had arrested a teenager under terrorism laws following the discovery of a "suspicious item" on a London underground train near Canary Wharf.

London City Airport in the eastern part of the city has been evacuated due to a chemical situation, the BBC reports.

I24news' United Kingdom correspondent Jonathan Sacerdoti said that several ambulance crews had been called to the scene as well as chemical specialists trained to handle such situations.

It said two people had been taken to hospital.

"It was getting quite bad and we saw other people starting to cough at the same time". Two patients were taken to the hospital, the service said. Eye-witnesses reported that people "started coughing uncontrollably". "The cause is not known", she added. "Everyone was shouting and rushing towards the door", he added.

Photographs showed passengers stranded on the tarmac and outside the terminal building, surrounded by emergency service vehicles.

Incoming planes from destinations such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Belfast City and Paris had to be diverted to other airports.

After a three-hour investigation by police and firefighters in protective clothing, the terminal was declared safe. At least 11 flights were listed as cancelled.
