All necessary support is being given to Odisha, says JP Nadda

Union Health Minister J P Nadda today said the Centre is providing all necessary support to Odisha where at least 22 patients died and several were injured in a fire that broke out at the Sum Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

The Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force was also mobilised to help the rescue exercise while Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi was also camping at the spot to coordinate the operation.

Bhubaneswar: A major fire broke out on Monday evening at Sum Hospital here in Khandagiri area. "Our current priority is to ensure the quickest and best possible treatment to the victims". A committee was constituted.

Although five fire tenders for more than three hours were deployed to bring the flames under control, smokes were continuing to billow from the first floor of the hospital. The commissionerate of police and fire brigade personnel along with volunteers and hospital staff launched a massive rescue operation as more than 500 indoor patients were trapped in the building, hospital officials said.

SUM Hospital is an intrinsic part of the Institute of Medical Sciences with a total number of 750 beds, 25 intensive care beds and 150 cabins.

Most of those who have died have perished from suffocation rather than the fire itself.

Besides the Capital Hospital, Dr Patnaik said, the patients were shifted to nearby AMRI Hospital, Apollo Hospital, Kalinga Hospital, SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and some other hospitals in the state capital region. "It will be hard to assess the situation at present", said Behera.

"An enquiry committee comprising director of medical education and training, the Khurda district collector and fire safety officers will jointly enquire into all aspects of the mishap", said a senior health department official. The cause of the fire has been blamed on an electrical short-circuit, but there is no official confirmation yet. The Capital Hospital has opened a helpline number 9439991226 for information about patients.
