PS4 System Software 4.00 to Bring HDR, PS4 Pro Updates, and More

Announced at last week's PlayStation Meeting, every PS4 sold since the console's inception in 2013 will receive HDR support. Once those gamers see what HDR has to offer, Sony is betting that they'll be more likely to buy the new $399 PS4 Pro console that not only enables HDR but also higher 4K resolution upscaling to match. Codenamed as Shingen, the version 4.0 was released on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

But it's worth noting that this update seems like a prelude to HDR support on the upcoming PlayStation 4 Pro console.

Sony is set to release the 4.0 update for the PlayStation 4 later today and it will add that much anticipated HDR update for those with compatible TVs to take advantage of.

HDR aside, the 4.00 update will bring it with it several usability improvements, including a Quick Menu with Music control, and a LAN-based data transfer feature for use when changing systems.

The redesigned Quick Menu can now be accessed by holding down the Dual Shock 4's PS button. Here you will be able to find the overall trophy progression of the game, the most recent trophy you earned, as well as the popularity of the game among friends.

Improved quick menu - The quick menu no longer takes up all of the screen and can be customised so you can fiddle with the music you are playing, parties you can join and see trophies for the game you are now playing. Through wired LAN connection, one will be able to get all their data from the PS4 and move it to the PS4 Pro. The Quick Menu now features an enhanced Music section that will allow a user to discover, play music on Spotify without opening the app. It looks stylish, clutter free and most of all makes your PS4 console a fun gaming platform to enjoy games the way you want it to with high quality HDR output.

We've given a similar redesign to the content info screen, which you can access by pressing down on a game tile while on the home screen. The left section will show a larger Activity Feed, while the right column has designated areas for Now Playing, Trending, Players You May Know, and Who to Follow.
