Colin Kaepernick will donate his jersey sale proceeds to communities in need

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said on Wednesday that he disagrees with Colin Kaepernick's choice to kneel during the national anthem because "we believe very strongly in patriotism in the NFL".

"I support our players when they want to see change in society, and we don't live in a flawless society", Goodell added.

"I love that there's freedom of speech and he can stand up for what he believes in", Curry said in an interview with CNBC's Sara Eisen.

United States women's national soccer team star Megan Rapinoe took a knee during the anthem at her latest NWSL game in a "nod" to Kaepernick.

Kaepernick tweaked the protest before San Francisco's preseason clash with the San Diego Chargers on September 1. "I wish people would get as outraged about the murders that are happening in the street as they are the protest", he said Wednesday.

Kaepernick made news late last month after he and a teammate, Eric Reid, chose to sit out the national anthem before an August 26 pre-season game in a show of protest against racial injustice. We encourage our players to be respectful in that time and I like to think of it as a moment where we can unite as a country.

"For me, that support is something I have to give back to the communities for that cause because that's what their belief is, that's what my belief is and we can work towards a common goal". "So I feel strongly both ways".

Despite some prominent figures, including 2016 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, slamming Kaepernick for refusing to stand during the national anthem, the 49ers recently made a decision to keep him on their official roster. "I think there's a long history of sports figures doing so".

This comes after Kaepernick announced last week that he's putting his money where his mouth is by donating million to groups combatting racial inequality and police brutality.

"I'm not anti-American", Kaepernick said after his second game protesting.

The 49ers open up their season on Monday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams.

Things have fallen off considerably from there and expecting that kind of run from Kaepernick again may be a stretch, although any extended rough patch or injury for Gabbert could bring the chance to see if lightning will strike twice.
