Dalai Lama urges talks with IS help for refugees

Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama met Thursday with European Parliament President Martin Schulz in Strasbourg.

A report by Xinhua quoting a Chinese mainland official said permitting the leader into Taiwan would ultimately put a greater strain on relations. "We firmly oppose any form of visit".

The Dalai Lama, called a "traitor" by China for his views on Tibet, has been invited to Taiwan by one of its high-profile lawmakers, Freddy Lim, who met the Tibetan leader in India last week. "Lim is inviting him to visit Taiwan to share his ideas and religious philosophy", Mr Chang said.

Lim's assistant said the legislator, who is a critic of Beijing, said the Dalai Lama was highly respected in Taiwan. Taiwan's former president Ma Ying-jeou, who favoured closer economic ties with China, refused the Dalai Lama entry several times since his last visit to Taiwan in 2009.

Last week, when Lim extended the invitation, Taiwan's Legislative Speaker Su Jia-chyuan appeared to express support for it, saying he backs anyone who will fight for democracy and freedom.

On Tuesday, Minister of Foreign Affairs David Lee (李大維) told lawmakers that if the Dalai Lama made a decision to come, the ministry would review the matter carefully, Chinese-language media reported.

Taiwan's final decision on the matter has not been made immediately clear.

China claims Taiwan as its own and has never renounced the use of force to bring it under its control.

"We need education about moral principles and moral ethics that aren't based on religion, but on scientific knowledge, common experience and common sense", he said, adding that such a system would help create more compassion in future generations.
