Chiefs to get first crack at Jones

At 31 years old, this will likely be the last hurrah for Thomas Jones in free agency, and while the possibility still remains that he’ll come back to play in New York next fall, Kansas City has apparently made the first move to lock him in to a new deal.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Jones is scheduled to visit with the Chiefs at the team’s facilities in Kansas City on Monday, and considering their need for a solid running back to pair with superstar in the making Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs will be pulling out all the stops to keep him in town for the long haul.

Kansas City has been relatively quiet thus far in the free agency period, briefly popping up on the radar screen yesterday evening with a competing offer for then Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin, but then dropping back down after their proposal didn’t make the cut. With needs all across the board and plenty of money to spend, the Chiefs should be active as free agency progresses, and a signing of Jones could be the first step in that effort.
