Round One (1-16)

As everyone knows, pegging draft picks this early is a crap shoot at best, but we’re giving it a go anyway. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts on the selections, along with your own picks in the comment section!

Draft order is based on NFLNR’s week eleven power rankings with the exception of picks #31 and #32, as I’ve predicted the Super Bowl teams for those two spots.

* Updated on 11/17/09

1. Sam Bradford (Quarterback – Oklahoma)

There is no way the Browns stick with Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson after this season is complete, and while this class of QBs definitely leaves a bit to be desired, Cleveland will have to take the best one available with this pick.

Previous pick: Jake Locker (QB)

2. Ndamakong Suh (Defensive Tackle – Nebraska)

The Lions did an outstanding job of collecting talent last off-season, and I doubt they’ll deviate from that route any time soon, especially now that they actually have a few intelligent minds running the show. Suh is easily the best DT available and should help in giving the Lions coaching staff a legit front line to work with.

Previous pick: Gerald McCoy (DT)

3. Eric Berry (Safety – Tennessee)

Berry is the best player available at this point, bar none, and the Bucs shouldn’t waste more than a few minutes in getting their pick to the commisioner if he’s still on the board.

Previous pick: Ndamakong Suh (DT)

4. Jimmy Clausen (Quarterback – Notre Dame)

Mark Bulger needs to get out while he’s still alive and Kyle Boller isn’t answer behind him. Clausen has the leadership and talent to make it at the next level but can the Rams protect him long enough for him to develop?

Previous pick: Same

5. Taylor Mays (Safety – USC)

Eric Berry is probably a better prospect overall, but Mays’ measurables and freakish talent on the field will be more than Al Davis can handle come draft day. I wouldn’t count out a quarterback here though, as JaMarcus Russell has been nothing short of atrocious this season.

Previous pick: Same

6. Rolando McClain (Linebacker – Alabama)

After watching the Chiefs defense get shredded every week with big plays on the ground, I’m even more convinced that McClain is the best pick for them here. Adding a stud MLB to lock down the interior is a must if KC is ever going to return to respectability.

Previous pick: Same

7. Russell Okung (Offensive Tackle – Oklahoma State)

Drafting a tackle will likely be priority number one this off-season for the Bills and at this point, I think they’d be hard pressed to find a better one than Okung, who is capable of locking down either side of the line right away.

Previous pick: Bruce Campbell (OT)

8. Jake Locker (Quarterback – Washington)

While I personally think they have a lot more pressing needs than quarterback, I can see how this pick could make some sense in the Washington front office. Locker isn’t an elite prospect now, but a solid showing at the combine and his workout will pump up his value in a hurry next spring.

Previous pick: Sam Bradford (QB)

9. Trent Williams (Offensive Tackle – Oklahoma)

The Seahawks will be in need of a major upgrade at tackle this off-season, with Walter Jones looking at retirement soon. Williams will be all that and more, as he has proved himself to be the Sooners best blocker this year.

Previous pick: Russell Okung (OT)

10. Colt McCoy (Quarterback – Texas)

(From CHI) Kyle Orton has shown he can play throughout the first part of this season, and at this point, I’d be surprised if they let him walk in the off-season. Still, the opportunity to snatch up McCoy here will probably prove to be too much for Josh McDaniels to handle, and instead of addressing real concerns, Denver will go after the future at QB.

Previous pick: Same

11. Dez Bryant (Wide Receiver – Oklahoma State)

Even with their midseason addition of Braylon Edwards, the Jets will still be looking for an upgrade at the position next season, and Bryant certainly has the ability to be that guy.

Previous pick: Damian Williams (WR)

12. Gerald McCoy (Defensive Tackle – Oklahoma)

The Titans have been pretty bad on defense and a lot of that stems from their loss of Albert Haynesworth in the middle of their defensive line. McCoy is cut from the same cloth as Haynesworth, capable of penetrating into the backfield and making plays on his own, which should help Tennessee get back to playing well next season.

Previous pick: Eric Berry (S)

13. Bryan Bulaga (Offensive Tackle – Iowa)

(From CAR) – Solidifying the right side of their offensive line will be a big priority during the off-season, and if Mike Singletary isn’t able to convince a free agent to come in and play there, I would expect them to use this pick to address that need. Bulaga comes from a solid program at Iowa and should transition into the league fairly easily.

Previous pick: Same

14. Terrance Cody (Defensive Tackle – Alabama)

Adding “Mount” Cody to the fold will only make Mike Singletary’s defense better next season, as he will eat up blockers and free his fellow defenders to flow to the ball on almost every play.

Previous pick: Eric Norwood (DE/LB)

15. Brandon Spikes (Linebacker – Florida)

The Giants are going to need an infusion of talent to their LB corps if they are to get back to their winning ways anytime soon. His recent eye gouging attack aside, Spikes is a tremendous player with a great work ethic and skill level that should fit in nicely with what New York likes to do defensively.

Previous pick: Vince Oghobaase (DT)

16. Joe Haden (Cornerback – Florida)

With Cody off the board a few picks earlier, the Dolphins will likely turn to improving their receivers or their secondary. And seeing as there really isn’t a WR worth picking here, the selection of Haden makes the most sense in terms of his projected value.

Previous pick: Terrance Cody (DT)

Re draft order: Cleveland & Detroit play this weekend so one of them must win Game 2 (although, a tie would be wonderful). I don’t know if Tampa Bay will win again in 2009, & I am a Bucs fan.
    I am drooling over Suh!!
