Nintendo Switch Details Revealed: Compatibility With Older Games, Confirmed Titles, & More

Among the rumors and leaks that have been circulating about the Nintendo Switch before the trailer was released, there has been talk about the new console bringing back the use of cartridges for games. The Switch offers a custom Tegra processor.

Nintendo has finally put to bed months, if not years, of rumours surrounding its next home console, previously codenamed the NX, by formally revealing, with a three-minute preliminary announcement, what the Switch is all about. On Thursday, those anxious gamers got a few drips of what Nintendo has in store for 2017.

And if the Joy-Con controllers aren't you thing, you can change it up with the Nintendo Switch pro controller - which they showed off with an eSports style Splatoon competition.

On further questioning about whether the Switch would be able to play certain smartphone games, Nintendo basically refused to answer that question as whole at the moment. "Our dedication to creating emotionally engaging interactive stories that are identical for players using home consoles or on mobile/tablet devices on the go is a ideal fit for Nintendo's innovative new hardware", said Job J Stauffer, the studio's head of creative communications.

"In an era of smart devices where you can play games anywhere, I don't think conceptually it is evolutionary enough", Anvarzadeh said.

Potential profit from the Nintendo Switch may not exactly reflect and affect the Nintendo 3DS' already steady sales. It's essentially a Wii U tablet that's slimmer, more portable and can be docked to display on HDTVs.

As previously rumored, the Joy-Con controllers for the Switch will have motion sensing and rumble in the manner of the Wii Remote. For multiplayer games and experiences, two individuals can each take one of the pads and use it sideways like a Wii or NES controller.

But what else do we know is in store for Nintendo's latest flagship console?

It looks like the Switch forgoes the idea of optical discs for game media, which makes sense if they intend for the system to be used on-the-go.

What that device never permitted, however, was a truly free traveling experience, and that's what Nintendo, which has continued to build and invest in handheld consoles, is now delivering. It's unclear whether enabling portable mode will decrease performance, favoring lower resolution and frame rate for the sake of battery life.
