Birmingham, Alabama schools locked down as 'clowns threaten children on Facebook'

A Facebook page entitled "Flomo Klowns" that featured scary clowns with blood and other gore prompted the lockdown at Flomaton High School and Flomaton Elementary (all located on the same campus), Huxford Elementary north of Atmore, Escambia Academy near Atmore and a partial lockdown at Escambia County High School in Atmore.

The threats led to the school being placed in lockdown for several hours on Thursday (15 September), as 30 officers and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents scoured school grounds.

Last week, two schools in Escambia County, Ala. were put on lockdown after a group of "Flomo Klowns" posted threatening messages on Facebook.

Lewis says the soft lockdown was a precaution only, and there was no disruption to classes.

Most cases report incidents of clowns trying to lure children into the woods with treats. "There was no threat", Lewis said.

A parent of a student from one of the Alabama schools notified the police department in Flomaton after her child received a threatening message from the group's page.

Yet another creepy clown incident has happened in Alabama, this time in the tiny Birmingham suburb of Brighton, where a clown jumped out from behind some bushes, chased two teenagers, then jumped into a white van and sped off. A school resource officer, says "there was no threat". Police say again they found no evidence of a clown. "These threats under Alabama Law could result in arrest for "Making a Terroristic Threat" which is a felony".

"Anytime someone makes a threat only they know what they are capable of doing", Wade said. FOX News reports that officials believe that the show of force against the threats may have applied the brakes to the creepy clown's sinister hold across the South.

Previous reports of creepy clowns in Georgia, North Carolina and SC also caused a stir nationally, particularly because some of the reports described the clowns as attempting to lure children into the woods with candy.

Officials have not released information regarding how Smith may be tied to the Facebook page or what charges she might face.
