Boy seen in car with passed-out adults gets new home

The 4-year-old OH boy featured in a now-viral photo shared by police that shows his grandmother strung out on heroin at a traffic stop has been placed in the custody of a great-aunt and great-uncle who reside in South Carolina, NBC News reported Wednesday, citing an attorney for the child's maternal great-grandparents.

The East Liverpool, Ohio, Police Department, posted this September 7, 2016, photo of a young boy sitting in a vehicle behind his grandmother and her boyfriend, both of whom are unconscious from a drug overdose. Some were supportive of the police department's and city's decision to release the photos, while others say the child's face shouldn't have been shown.

According to NBC News, the boy, who has not been identified, will be living with his great aunt and great uncle in SC.

During a custody battle, Pasek's 2008 conviction for public intoxication and a 2007 conviction for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct were brought up in court, her sister and Mr Walton said.

Pasek was granted custody just six weeks before her arrest, according to court records. Acord pleaded no contest to operating a vehicle while intoxicated and endangering children and is is serving 360 days in jail, reports The New York Post.

"I noted Lifeteam [the area rescue squad] administered several rounds of a drug known as Narcan which is commonly used to treat opiate overdose", wrote Thompson.

Pasek was raising the boy because her own troubled son and his girlfriend couldn't manage, a family member told NBC. Thompson said he called an ambulance when he noted that Pasek was turning blue.

These images, which were taken by police last Wednesday and posted on the city's Facebook page, gave people a firsthand look at the ongoing impact of the devastating heroin epidemic that's consumed the United States. The original photos distributed by the East Liverpool municipal government did not hide the child's face; however, WHSV has opted to add a digital blur. He then tried to shift the vehicle into drive, only to have Thompson reach in and take away the keys.

An East Liverpool police officer was driving to work when the couple stopped behind a school bus.

Brian Allen, the city's director of public services and safety, did not apologize for putting the photo on Facebook and told NBC that the feedback has been "90 percent positive, 10 percent negative".

"I like the approach about trying to get the public from ever starting using these drugs rather than thinking about how to lock them up once they've started", he said.

OH police shared shocking images showing Rhonda Pasek and James Acord passed out from heroin.
