SpaceX Fails To Land Flacon 9 Rocket For a Fourth Time

Friday's launch followed a series of five delays over the past couple of weeks, including setbacks due to technical and weather-related problems.

The Falcon launched from Cape Canaveral on time after a number of postponed attempts, including a last second scrubbed launch on Sunday.

SpaceX has another launch under its belt, but not another rocket landing.

It was the fifth attempt by SpaceX and it was well worth the wait on a handsome night from Cape Canaveral.

In three previous attempts that occurred in January and April 2015 and January this year, a Falcon 9 first stage had reached this stage while trying an ocean landing.

Musk also clarified the mission requirements made a successful rocket landing unlikely. Recently, a successful landing by SpaceX was achieved on land. Unfortunately, as he said in a tweet last night, the rocket "landed hard".

The next SpaceX launch is slated for March 29 at 8:35 p.m. from Cape Canaveral.

Friday's landing was expected to be hard because of the distance the rocket had to travel to propel the satellite to its geostationary orbit, and because it might have run short on the fuel needed to control its return, SpaceX representatives said.

The rocket dropped off the SES-9 satellite at high altitude.

SpaceX was aiming to deliver the satellite as high as 24,233 miles (39,000 km) above Earth and still have enough fuel to land the first stage of the Falcon rocket on a platform floating about 400 miles (645 km) off Florida's coast.

"SES-9 is an important building block in our strategy to grow in dynamic regions and four prime sectors - video, enterprise, mobility and government", SES chief technology officer Martin Halliwell told the BBC.
