Circuit of the Americas: US Grand Prix will run in 2016

The Austin race was thrown into doubt past year after the Texas state government reduced the subsidy it pays to the track to host the event.

Organizers of the American race scheduled for October 23 at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas will be hosting a news conference on Wednesday, where it is expected the race will be confirmed, although no details have emerged. The first race of the Formula One season is the Australian Grand Prix on March 20.

But the race, which takes place at the purpose-built Circuit of the Americas and is popular with both drivers and fans alike, will return for its fifth consecutive event later this year to ensure a record 21 grands prix in 2016. "I think we understand their calculations better, and I think we have to do a better job of conveying the economic impact to them", said COTA CEO Bobby Epstein.

The race had been listed on the official calendar with an asterisk marking it as subject to agreement with commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone due to uncertainty over the extent of state funding. "But it won't be like 2015 and it did make for what people said was the most exciting race in over a decade". Lewis Hamilton's victory past year wrapped up his third Formula One season championship. And the track recently got a significant local tax break on its property value.

The track also booked a race weekend concert by pop superstar Taylor Swift, which Epstein said should draw even more fans. "We need the future", added Epstein.
