New Zealand gunman shoots and injures 4 police officers

Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement told reporters on Wednesday evening the stand-off started in the morning when shots were fired at a police aircraft on a cannabis operation.

Waikato District Health Board have confirmed one policeman is now in a serious but stable condition following the shooting, it is unknown which policeman of the four victims.

Two of the injured police officers had been discharged from hospital, said an earlier statement from the Police.

One of the officers is in a serious condition in hospital.

The leaders of the standoff, Ammon and Ryan Bundy, were arrested at the same traffic stop at which Finicum was slain. George, Utah, Jeanette Finicum said she believes her husband was shot with his hands in the air trying to surrender.

The Armed Offenders Squad, a specialist unit of the New Zealand Police created to cordon, contain and appeal to armed and unsafe offenders, was at the scene and the area was cordoned off, police said.

He said police had the area around the house contained but he did not want to say too much as the offender "may be watching on his own television " .

Police confirm a fourth officer has been shot.

As officers on the ground moved in to arrest the man, he shot three of them, Clement said.

The attack took place in the Bay of Plenty when police personnel were in the area to seize illegal cannabis when the first shots were fired.

7pm: Police announce a defence helicopter has been deployed to the scene along with three light armoured vehicles. A large police operation is underway at the property, where the gunman is believed to be holed up.

At around 11.30am, another shot was sacked at an aircraft being used by Police and armed Police staff then cordoned a rural property in Onepu Springs Road, Otakiri, about 70km from Rotorua.

Two of the officers are in a stable condition at Whakatane Hospital.
