World Health Organization recommends safe sex to prevent Zika transmission

Queensland health authorities have undertaken significant mosquito control programs after the Zika transmitting mosquitoes were found in the vicinity of patients confirmed to have contracted the virus.

To fight the effects of the ongoing Zika virus outbreak, the World Health Organization is strengthening its guidelines for pregnant women traveling to affected areas.

Therefore the Emergency Committee recommended that pregnant women should be advised not travel to areas of ongoing Zika virus outbreaks, pregnant women whose sexual partners live in or travel to areas with Zika virus outbreaks should ensure safe sexual practices or abstain from sex for the duration of their pregnancy. It can also be transmitted sexually and that has already happened in the U.S. There have been 14 reported cases in the U.S. where the infected male passed on the virus to his female partner.

The Zika virus is usually nothing more than a rash, fever, and joint pain for most- but the danger lies with pregnant women as birth defects have been associated.

Zika was previously only known to cause moderate cold and flu-like symptoms, but increasing evidence indicates the virus may be connected to multiple neurological disorders, as well as microcephaly, a severe birth defect in which babies are born with smaller heads and brains.
