First case of Montana Zika virus reported in a Missoula woman

In a report released Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also revealed that nine US women who traveled to parts of the world where mosquitoes carrying Zika are prominent were found to be infected.

Of the group of nine, two suffered miscarriages, two ended their pregnancies because of brain abnormalities, and one gave birth to a child with microcephaly.

Two of the pregnant women had symptoms of Zika infections during their second trimester of pregnancy, and one of these women gave birth to an apparently healthy infant, while the other pregnancy is continuing.

Zika infection in pregnant women has been linked to babies being born with microcephaly, which causes abnormally small heads.

The CDC reports that only one out of every five people who get infected with the Zika virus ever experience any illness.

All the women reported common symptoms of Zika virus infection - including fever, rash and joint pain - and all were confirmed in lab tests to have Zika virus infections. The report highlighted two cases in which women contracted Zika after having sex with symptomatic men.

There are now three confirmed Zika cases in Iowa, state public health officials said Friday. Two women who experienced symptoms later in their pregnancies delivered healthy babies. They can monitor for complications through blood tests and ultrasounds, though there is no cure or specific treatment for Zika.

If travel can not be postponed, use of insect repellant and /or clothes treated with permethrin, and staying in places with air conditioning and window and door screens while in affected areas to prevent mosquito bites is strongly recommended.

While mosquitoes are the primary vector for Zika infection, the CDC has confirmed six cases of sexual transmission of the virus from men to their female partners.

In October 2015, Brazilian authorities reported a concerning increase in microcephaly, which has occurred in close sequence to Brazil's outbreak of the mosquito-borne Zika virus. Providers should consult CDC's guidelines for evaluation and testing of pregnant women, available on the CDC website. Like the other nine, these are women who traveled to Zika-infected areas and returned to the United States.

Two new cases of the Zika virus have been confirmed in South Florida. The two new cases are in addition to Iowa's first case, announced last week. Therefore, positive or inconclusive tests should be followed up with additional screening to confirm a Zika diagnosis.

The state continues to encourage current Florida residents or visitors, or people planning to travel to Florida in the near future, to call the hotline with questions about exposure to Zika.
