Clinton Secures Lopsided Win In South Carolina Primary

A solid showing in SC, particularly among African-Americans, could solidify Clinton's playbook as she tries to scoop up more delegates in the Deep South.

The South Carolina win is Clinton's third in the first four primary contests.

Following his win in New Hampshire earlier this month, Sanders told CBS News' Scott Pelley that he had a "strong chance" in Nevada and SC. Blacks accounted for 62 percent of South Carolina Democratic primary voters and Clinton won 84 percent of their votes.

Clinton has more aggressively embraced Obama's agenda as Sanders drew closer in national polls.

As Clinton's race with Sanders has grown tighter, she's moved to fully embrace Obama, who remains popular with Democrats and particularly black voters.

During a raucous victory rally, Clinton briefly reveled in her sweeping support from SC voters, hugging backers and posing with them for selfie photos.

Clinton could do well in southern states where the Democratic electorate is largely black or Hispanic, but Oklahoma's demographics and voting trends are different - and could benefit Sanders, said Keith Gaddie, chair of the University of Oklahoma's Department of Political Science.

SC was allotted 59 delegates to the Democratic National Convention, though six of these are superdelegates, who are elected officials and select party leaders and DNC national committee members free to support any candidate they choose. Connie Johnson, who is actively campaigning for Sanders. 36,000 South Carolinians voted early, but the state is expecting a relatively low turnout of around 350,000 voters. "We're going to win a lot of them".

Clinton and her team built on relationships in SC grounded from her 2008 presidential campaign, which she lost to then-U.S. Barack Obama.

Vermont Senator Mr Sanders has the support of some high-profile African Americans such as film director Spike Lee and the rapper Killer Mike.

But the Sanders camp is already discounting the result on Saturday, pointing out that Sanders was little known in SC before the primary and had already cut into Clinton's wide polling leads. In Iowa and New Hampshire, voters under 30 made up just under 20 percent of the primary vote.

Moments after she clinched a win in the South Carolina Democratic primary, Hillary Clinton tweeted: "To South Carolina, to the volunteers at the heart of our campaign, to the supporters who power it: thank you". He's supposed to be in Texas and Minnesota, two of the Super Tuesday states.
