SC seeks Centre's response on Delhi court violence plea

The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to consider a plea seeking contempt action against three lawyers allegedly caught on camera bragging and boasting that they had beaten up Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar in police lock-up for three hours at the Patiala House Court complex.

Meanwhile, not giving any protection from arrest, two students of JNU-Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhttacharya- have been directed by the Delhi High Court to surrender.

One of the lawyers was seen claiming that he would not sign a bail bond only to land in jail so that he could beat up Kanhaiya again inside the jail premises.

In the statement attached with the FIR, police had identified Umar and Anirban as the "main organizers" and later in the court, the investigators mentioned about the presence of "foreign elements" (outsiders) in the event. Detailed statements submitted by the alleged victims in these assault cases were not considered by the police. Around 4 pm on Friday, Kumar was taken from RK Puram police station to Tihar, where metropolitan magistrate Lovleen conducted the remand proceedings.

JNU alumnus N.D. Jayaprakash moved the apex court on 17 February seeking a non-violent and calm environment in court to ensure Kumar got his day in court.

The Times of India said Delhi Police might charge some faculty members for harboring Khalid and Bhattacharya, who said they went to Ghaziabad and Jharkhand after Kumar's arrest because they feared a backlash.

While Khalid has so far denied having indulged in any anti-national sloganeering, Anirban challenged claims that the slogans pointed out by the police were anti-national in nature, the source claimed.

Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on February 12 after the event held on the university campus in commemoration of the death of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru who was executed in 2013.
