Federation Internationale de Football Association reduces suspensions for Blatter, Platini to 6 years

Feb 24, 2016, 23:09

Frenchman Platini's ban, along with that of former FIFA President Sepp Blatter, was reduced from eight to six years by the appeals committee, based on the mitigating factor of the pair's services to the game.

The committee said "activities and services rendered to Fifa, Uefa and football" was a mitigating factor.

But the ban has ended the 60-year-old's hope of becoming FIFA president and he will now not be able to attend Friday's congress which will choose Blatter's replacement.

Blatter and Platini will therefore have one year taken off their five-year bans for offering and accepting gifts and other benefits and another year taken off the three-year bans for the other breaches.

Platini was openly critical of Blatter in the run-up to last year's election, but both have been united again in being brought down by the scandal that has rocked their sport.

However, football's coverning body reduced their bans from eight years to six.

"The reasons given against me are baseless, trumped up and surreal, given the facts and explanations that I gave during the hearing of the appeals board", Platini said in a statement released through his legal team.

"In reality, it is a political decision taken by a bureaucracy that has no counterweight at the heart of its organisation".

"I am deeply disappointed by the FIFA Appeal Commission", said Blatter on Wednesday.

Blatter and Platini were initially found guilty of wrongdoing by FIFA's independent ethics committee, which is led by a German judge, over a previously-secret 2011 financial transaction.

Platini has previously said he asked for a salary of 1 million Swiss francs when approached in 1998 to work for the newly-elected Blatter. From then on, Platini was the likely successor to lead FIFA. Furthermore, Mr Platini shall pay a fine in the amount of CHF 80,000 within 30 days of notification of the present decision.
