Boldin trade talk heating up; Miami in the mix

Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin is no stranger to off-season trade discussions, having pushed for his team to deal him elsewhere multiple times in absence of a new contract to pay him a similar amount of money as his counterpart Larry Fitzgerald.

Up to now though, Arizona has been unwilling to part with Boldin, preferring instead to let him brood quietly in the locker room over his salary concerns while he puts up solid numbers on the field. All of that could change in the near future, as the word on the street is that multiple teams are eyeing a potential trade offer to acquire Boldin, and depending on the price, a deal could be struck this off-season to send the receiver packing for a new home.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins are apparently okay with the idea of sending a third round selection in this year’s draft to obtain Boldin, and talks between the two sides could start up fairly soon. Obviously, it’s still early in the process and much of the talk surrounding a trade of Boldin is still speculation, but there seems to be a definite consensus among league insiders that this is the year that Boldin finally gets dealt.

Other potential suitors for Boldin’s services include Kansas City, Baltimore, Chicago, New England, and Detroit, with the Chiefs being the most likely destination given head coach Todd Haley’s previous relationship with Boldin in Arizona.

Scouting Combine updates – Friday

The NFL Scouting Combine is a beehive of activity for many of the NFL’s top executives and coaches, and this year is no exception, with plenty of interesting information floating around to fuel the speculation that defines the off-season.

With that in mind, here’s a quick roundup of what’s being said this morning, with the workouts set to begin in earnest later today.

Chicago to add Weis at season’s end?

There have been a ton of rumors swirling around former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis as of late, very few of which actually have any substance, but are fun to discuss nonetheless.

The latest pitches a potential marriage between the Bears and Weis during the off-season, with Weis making a short jaunt down to Chicago from South Bend to be the new offensive coordinator in the Windy City, assuming the Bears dump their current coach in that position, Ron Turner.

Neil Hayes of the Chicago Sun-Times cites a source close to Weis that says he would definitely be interested in a position with the Bears, should Turner be relieved of his duties, and feels it would be the easiest transition for his family given the proximity between Chicago and South Bend. The closeness would also provide Weis an opportunity to silence the same critics that dogged his time with the Irish.

Having a franchise quarterback already in place in Jay Cutler is another positive factor for Weis, as he feels the challenge of getting Cutler back to the level of play he exhibited during his time in Denver.

49ers staying close to home in pass rush search

San Francisco hasn’t closed the door on a possible Julius Peppers addition this off-season, but for the time being they’re content to develop their pass rush in house with players that have thus far underachieved.

According to the Sacramento Bee, the Niners will be using LBs Parys Haralson and Manny Lawson in a hybrid pass rushing role within their 3-4 defense this season, and so far that move looks good on the practice field. Getting it to work in a real game situation is entirely different though, so the team still has their phone lines open to a potential trade to acquire Peppers from Carolina and may seek to bring free agent DE Jason Taylor into the mix as the summer progresses.

Getting Peppers would be extremely tricky, as San Fran would likely have to cough up a first round pick and more to pry him loose, but the return on such an investment would be huge. In Peppers, the 49ers would have a relatively young pass rusher that is experienced, determined, and has superstar caliber talent. That addition alone could vault the team into the race for NFC West supremacy, although it seems that the Cardinals currently have a stranglehold on that division.

As always, we’ll keep an eye out for anything we see on this and all the other news from around the league.

Cleveland nixed deal for Ronnie Brown

According to Michael Lombardi (National Football Post), the Browns apparently had an offer on the table that would have sent Miami Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown to Cleveland in exchange for WR Braylon Edwards, but the Browns front office ‘backed away’ from the deal to reconsider.

Cleveland is in need of a starting running back to replace aging veteran Jamal Lewis, and despite having already traded away TE Kellen Winslow this off-season, they seem to be intent on moving Edwards sooner rather than later. Adding a RB of Brown’s caliber would do wonders for their offense and would take a fair amount of pressure away from whoever Eric Mangini decides to start at QB this season.

Miami, on the other hand, could definitely use another standout receiver to pair with the lightning fast Ted Ginn, Jr. and Edwards would most certainly provide them with that, although the loss of Brown from their backfield would be tough to bear. We’ll see if anything comes of this as we get closer to the draft, but for now it seems that the deal is dead in the water.
