Boldin trade talk heating up; Ravens, Chiefs lead the pack

Fri @ 5:25 pm – Boldin will get a new contract as well, according to Schefter… four years, $28 million

5:22 pm – The deal is all but done. Baltimore is sending their 3rd and 4th round picks in this year’s draft to Arizona and will receive Boldin plus the Cardinals’ fifth round selection. Ravens receiving corps now looks to be fairly solid with Boldin, Mason, Stallworth, and Clayton.

4:40 pm – Apparently, the Pats involvement was minimal at best. It’s now down to the Chiefs and the Ravens according to multiple sources.

Sports Illustrated’s Peter King is saying the Ravens are close to pulling it off and Baltimore Sun beat writer Jamison Hensley agrees, saying it will likely be for a third round pick in this year’s draft. No word on what the Chiefs are offering.

Boldin trade talk heating up; Miami in the mix

Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin is no stranger to off-season trade discussions, having pushed for his team to deal him elsewhere multiple times in absence of a new contract to pay him a similar amount of money as his counterpart Larry Fitzgerald.

Up to now though, Arizona has been unwilling to part with Boldin, preferring instead to let him brood quietly in the locker room over his salary concerns while he puts up solid numbers on the field. All of that could change in the near future, as the word on the street is that multiple teams are eyeing a potential trade offer to acquire Boldin, and depending on the price, a deal could be struck this off-season to send the receiver packing for a new home.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins are apparently okay with the idea of sending a third round selection in this year’s draft to obtain Boldin, and talks between the two sides could start up fairly soon. Obviously, it’s still early in the process and much of the talk surrounding a trade of Boldin is still speculation, but there seems to be a definite consensus among league insiders that this is the year that Boldin finally gets dealt.

Other potential suitors for Boldin’s services include Kansas City, Baltimore, Chicago, New England, and Detroit, with the Chiefs being the most likely destination given head coach Todd Haley’s previous relationship with Boldin in Arizona.

Quick hits – Vikings, Pierce, Rams, Boldin

Here’s the latest news from around the league this morning…

  • Minnesota has officially moved on from their Brett Favre infatuation, but sources close to the situation continue to say things are far from being over, and a Favre-Vikings combination could be revisited in the near future, especially if their current duo at QB proves incapable of handling a starting role with the team.
  • The fallout from former Giants WR Plaxico Burress‘ illegal weapons charge in New York has expanded to potentially include Giants LB Antonio Pierce in an indictment, according to  the New York Daily News
  • ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that #2 overall pick Jason Smith and the St. Louis Rams are very close to reaching a contract agreement, although nothing has been confirmed by the team as of yet.
  • Disgruntled Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin has reportedly arrived at the team’s training camp complex and will participate in practices despite his contract issues with the front office.

Dockett wants out, but Cards say no

Darnell Dockett was a dominant player for the NFC Champs last season. Now he wants to get paid like one.

Citing a source close to the situation, John Clayton and Mike Sando (ESPN.com) are reporting that Dockett has voiced his frustration with his current contract status to upper management in Arizona, and after basically being told to wait his turn, he asked for a trade.

The Cardinals have thus far dismissed that request out of hand, but apparently have not ruled out a potential extension sometime in the near future. It’s likely that any such discussion though, will come after Arizona is able to resolve their current issues with WR Anquan Boldin, LB Karlos Dansby, and S Adrian Wilson, who all expect to receive major contract offers given their status as premier players.

Boldin talks heat up after Cardinals lower expectations

Sal Paolantonio (ESPN.com) is reporting that Arizona has dropped it’s initial demand of a first round pick in return for WR Anquan Boldin, and will now accept offers that include a second round selection along with other considerations.

This has jumpstarted the speculation that Boldin will be traded by tomorrow afternoon, and the Eagles, Giants, and Jets have all expressed serious interest in making a play for the Pro Bowl receiver. It’s likely that Kansas City would also be interested after trading away their Pro Bowl TE in Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta yesterday.

Boldin has had several run ins over the past two seasons with Cardinals management, and has repeatedly expressed his anger over being paid significantly less than his teammate Larry Fitzgerald. Any team that does acquire Boldin would have to commit a large amount of money to him as well as the compensation, but given his production over his career, not many can argue with the value at this point.

Titans making a play to bring Boldin to the Music City?

According to the Nashville Tennessean, the Titans are keeping the door open for a possible blockbuster trade with Arizona to acquire Pro Bowl WR Anquan Boldin. The Cardinals have stayed fairly mum on the issue of trading away Boldin this off-season, but seem to have warmed to the idea now that the draft is so close, and the Titans definitely have a need for an upgrade at the position.

The Titans have plenty of picks and cash to make a deal like this come to fruition, but typically they value their draft selections and do not trade them away for current players. Boldin is obviously a special case given his talent, but it would be a bit of a surprise to see Jeff Fisher and Co. deciding to give up the number of picks it would take to get Boldin in the fold.

Once again, this is still speculative at best, but given the interest shown by both teams thus far, it could heat up pretty quick.

Eagles will be aggressive in the draft once again

Over the past few seasons, no team has been more comfortable in moving around the selection order than the Philadelphia Eagles, and this year should be no exception, according to Rob Maadi (Yahoo! Sports). The Eagles have been rumored to be in on pretty much every single deal involving a top flight wide receiver this off-season, and although they lost some leverage when they traded away the second of their two first round picks to get Pro Bowl tackle Jason Peters from the Bills, they still may end up sending their other top pick to get Donovan McNabb the superstar playmaker he needs at WR.

Chad Ocho Cinco, Anquan Boldin, and Braylon Edwards are all on the trading block, and could probably be had for Philly’s remaining pick in round one. Philadelphia already has one of the better WR corps in the league right now, with DeSean Jackson, Kevin Curtis, Jason Avant, Hank Baskett, and Reggie Brown holding down the fort, but that still leaves them without a true star at the position. Adding a Boldin or a Edwards would certainly solve that issue, but are they worth the 21st overall pick? That’s something the Eagles will have to decide before they hit the clock on Saturday.

One way or another, you can expect Philly to move around a bit though, as they’ve shown themselves to not be afraid of taking risks by trading up or down depending on what they need in the draft. And if they can obtain a solid receiver in the process, they could find themselves right back in the thick of things next year with a shot at yet another Super Bowl.

Boldin crawls back to the table

According to Adam Schefter, Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin has instructed his agent Drew Rosenhaus to approach Arizona’s front office about the possibility of signing a new long term deal with the team.

Boldin would still prefer a trade to a different club, but apparently he has realized that given his current contract status, he really has no choice but to reach out to the Cardinals and hope they’ll offer him a long term deal or move him this off-season.

Boldin is seeking a deal that would be similar to the one signed by his team mate Larry Fitzgerald, placing him among the highest paid wide receivers in the league.

Boldin done with the Cards… for now

According to ESPN Insider, Arizona WR Anquan Boldin is making a major attempt to get out of the desert this off-season, and has instructed his agent, Drew Rosenhaus (of Terrell Owens fame), to not accept any contract extension proposal passed along by the Cardinals. In reporting this bit of news, ESPN cited a report by Darren Urban, who is a contributor for Arizona’s official team blog.

Boldin did his best to separate himself from that article during a sideline interview in last Sunday’s Pro Bowl game, claiming he was open to negotiation with the Cardinals front office, but given his repeated attempts over the past few off-seasons to obtain a new contract, it’s more than likely that he is ready to play hardball with the team if need be.

Boldin could definitely be of interest to multiple teams this off-season, with both New York teams, Kansas City, Tennessee, and possibly Baltimore taking a look at obtaining him if the price is right.

Fitz ready to take one for the team

According to Adam Schefter (NFL.com), Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald is willing to restructure his current contract to free up enough money for Arizona to sign fellow receiver Anquan Boldin to a long-term deal.

Fitz has shown time and time again to be a true team player for the Cardinals, taking significantly less in his deal last year to allow Arizona to pursue other key players, and this is no exception. Keeping Boldin together with Fitzgerald would allow the Cardinals to maintain their superior group of receivers, which is a must for a team that relies heavily on their vertical attack.

Boldin ready to go against the Eagles

Friday – 01/16/09

After making it through three straight practices without a hitch, Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin has proclaimed himself fit to start in this weekend’s playoff showdown with the visiting Philadelphia Eagles, according to Adam Schefter (NFL.com).

While his counterpart at WR, Larry Fitzgerald, had a monster game last week against Carolina, Boldin is by far the bigger threat in terms of yards after the catch, so having him healthy enough to start is a big plus for the Cardinals offense. Look for Arizona to try to ease him into the game plan early so they can keep him injury free, before turning him loose later in the game.

Wednesday – 01/14/09

The Associated Press is reporting that Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin was able to practice today, and plans on playing in this weekend’s showdown with Philadelphia for the right to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

Boldin sits against Carolina

Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin will be a gametime inactive according to Adam Schefter (NFL.com). Head coach Ken Whisenhunt made it pretty clear earlier today that the team could not afford to lose a roster spot against Carolina if Boldin suited up and failed to make it onto the field consistently.

This is a tough loss for the Cardinals, as Boldin is their best YAC receiver and even as a decoy on most plays, he would have tied up multiple Carolina defenders. That being said, Arizona has two outstanding WRs in Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston ready to go, which is something very few teams can boast of having, so they should be okay today offensively.
