Jason Taylor headed to Big Apple, signs with Jets

In a deal that was bound to happen sooner or later, the New York Jets have agreed in principle to a contract with free agent defensive end Jason Taylor.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is for two seasons and is worth an estimated $13 million. If things do not work out as planned, New York can extricate themselves from the contract after just one season, paying Taylor $3.75 million this year.

Taylor joins a Jets squad that has been completely revamped this off-season, with cornerback Antonio Cromartie, wide receiver Santonio Holmes, and running back LaDainian Tomlinson headlining their acquisitions.

49ers staying close to home in pass rush search

San Francisco hasn’t closed the door on a possible Julius Peppers addition this off-season, but for the time being they’re content to develop their pass rush in house with players that have thus far underachieved.

According to the Sacramento Bee, the Niners will be using LBs Parys Haralson and Manny Lawson in a hybrid pass rushing role within their 3-4 defense this season, and so far that move looks good on the practice field. Getting it to work in a real game situation is entirely different though, so the team still has their phone lines open to a potential trade to acquire Peppers from Carolina and may seek to bring free agent DE Jason Taylor into the mix as the summer progresses.

Getting Peppers would be extremely tricky, as San Fran would likely have to cough up a first round pick and more to pry him loose, but the return on such an investment would be huge. In Peppers, the 49ers would have a relatively young pass rusher that is experienced, determined, and has superstar caliber talent. That addition alone could vault the team into the race for NFC West supremacy, although it seems that the Cardinals currently have a stranglehold on that division.

As always, we’ll keep an eye out for anything we see on this and all the other news from around the league.

Taylor, Dolphins waiting to see what draft class brings

According to a report in the Miami Herald, the Dolphins still remain interested in potentially bringing DE Jason Taylor back to the team, but only after they search through their draft haul to find a pass rushing LB first. Miami currently holds the 25th overall pick in the draft and will likely have an opportunity to select several players that can handle those duties.

Taylor has been without a team since his surprising release by the Redskins earlier this off-season, and although his age is likely preventing many teams from contacting him, he still maintains that he has enough fuel in the tank to make at least one more run with a solid group of players around him. Taylor starred as a defensive end in Miami before injuries and off-the-field disputes with management sent him packing to Washington in a trade last year.

Tampa to take a long look at Taylor

One of the biggest needs for the Buccaneers entering the free agency period was a quality pass rusher or two. Turns out, one just may have fallen into their lap.

Pro Bowl DE Jason Taylor is out of work and looking for a new gig, preferably close to his home in South Florida, and according to the Tampa Tribune, the Bucs are planning on calling very soon.

Taylor was recently released by the Redskins after he reportedly refused to attend team workouts in the off-season. Officially, Washington cannot use that as the reasoning behind his release, as it would be in violation of the collective bargaining agreement with the Player’s Union, but that’s how it went down according to multiple sources.

Taylor would give the Buccaneers the pass rushing threat up front they need, along with key veteran leadership that is now missing after the team cut loose several Tampa stalwarts in LB Derrick Brooks and RB Warrick Dunn. He obviously is placing more of an emphasis on his off the field life these days, but his talent as a pass rusher is unquestionable as long as he stays healthy.
