Vikings proud of Harvin theft

The NFL Draft is full of moments where a slight of hand and quick thinking allow a team to “steal” a player before a rival is able to select them, and this year was no exception.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Vikings apparently feel that they “stole” WR Percy Harvin from the Patriots, who were set to select him one pick later than Minnesota. Typically, teams try to not reveal who they prefer to take in the draft, but Vikings head coach Brad Childress was successful in extracting that bit of information from Harvin, who had been told by New England that he was their guy.

“New England was right in there. They were right behind us [with the 23rd pick],” Childress said. “No, they didn’t think we’d take him [because of off-the-field] issues. Remember, they have our receivers coach there now. So they thought they could hold … and he’d come to them.

“They were down there working him out the day after I was there. And [Harvin] wasn’t supposed to tell anybody, and I was trying to pull that out of him, who that was. So, it was a little cat-and-mouse game that occurred.”

Bucs start damage control in Freeman’s QB controversy

It’s only two days after the draft and we already have our first quarterback controversy of the year broiling in Tampa Bay.

Bucs head coach Raheem Morris spent this morning doing his best to put the fire his new QB Josh Freeman started unintentially with this statement in an NFL.com draft chat:

“I felt that all along,” he wrote. “Even when they picked up Byron Leftwich. It was something they told me — they told me it was a smokescreen, everybody would think they didn’t want a QB. They said they were ready to trade up. I think it worked out great. I was sitting there with my family and enjoying it, and I got to go to the team that I wanted to go to.”

Joe Smith (St. Petersburg Times) spoke with Morris today and got this quote in response to the possibility of a controversy in Tampa with his quarterbacks: (more…)

Texas Tech coach slams Mangini for remarks on Crabtree

The war of words has begun.

According to the Sacramento Bee, Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach came out swinging on Sunday, hammering Browns head coach Eric Mangini for starting rumors about WR Michael Crabtree and his “”diva-ish” behavior during his visits in Cleveland. Apparently, Leach feels that Mangini’s comments led to the short-lived slide that Crabtree went through on Saturday, finally coming to a rest in San Francisco.

“Michael Crabtree has been more successful as a receiver than that guy has a coach at this point,” Leach said. ” … Part of the reason is he’s (Crabtree) too shy to be like that.”

“My definition of a diva is someone who’s loud and self-absorbed. Michael Crabtree is the furthest thing from loud that I’ve seen.”

Day one finally comes to a close

Two rounds, 64 picks, and several questionable trades later, the first day of the 2009 NFL Draft is complete. Obviously things strayed from the script somewhat, but then again what would the draft be without a bit of insanity from a few of the league’s wayward franchises?

There were teams that seemingly couldn’t get enough of the first two rounds (Broncos – 5 picks; Bills – 4 picks) and then there were teams that stayed away completely (Cowboys, Bears – Zero picks). And everyone’s favorite owner in Oakland did what he does best in getting the entire population of the country to collectively scratch their heads while simultaneously Twittering a rousing WTF?

With that in mind, here’s a quick rundown of each team’s picks in round one, along with my grades…I’ll also be working on round two, and should have it up and running before tomorrow’s festivities get started.

Top Ten Recap

Well, the top ten picks have come and gone, and now it’s time for the craziness to begin. Here’s a quick recap of how things went down…

1. Detroit Lions -  Matt Stafford (QB)

No brainer here, as the Lions had to get a legit QB now. Stafford has the game to be a stud, but can he handle playing for a terrible team in Detroit?

2. St. Louis Rams – Jason Smith (OT)
