40 buses burnt in Bangalore over Cauvery river row with Tamilnadu

Though there is no holiday for schools and colleges, many private schools have remained closed on Wednesday and the managements have chose to compensate th holiday by shortening the Dasara holidays next month. In the meantime, an additional 700 riot control police personnel have been rushed to Karnataka to tackle the situation arising out of the protests over Cauvery river water sharing.

Meanwhile, Home Minister G. Paremeshwara said 335 people were arrested in and around Bengaluru since Monday till Tuesday morning for rioting, arson and causing damage to public property.

Karnataka has taken off state-run buses travelling to Tamil Nadu.

A hotel promoted by a Kannadiga and some vehicles with Karnataka registration were attacked at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.

Modifying its September 5 order, the Supreme Court yesterday asked the Karnataka Government to release to release 12,000 cusecs of Cauvery River water every day to Tamil Nadu till September 20.

Curfew has been imposed in 16 police station limits in Bengaluru. "Violence in the state capital and other parts of Karnataka has severely dented the image of Bengaluru as the Silicon Valley of India, and home to nearly all of the Fortune 500 companies", says ASSOCHAM, India's leading industry body on Tuesday.

"A group of unidentified miscreants barged into our bus yard and set 30 of our coaches on fire with kerosene or petrol", Rajesh Natarajan, managing director of KPN Tours & Travels, a company based in Tamil Nadu, told local television.

Following the ongoing unrest in Bengaluru over the Cauvery water sharing row, central forces have been deployed to assist the city police to maintain law and order.

Police in Bangalore passed prohibitory orders preventing the gathering of more than five people after angry mobs smashed the windows of several buses from Tamil Nadu and attacked bus drivers. "We have chose to impose law and order with an iron hand".

Cable operators in Karnataka have also blocked scores of Tamil Nadu television channels in a bid to defuse tensions, while bus services between the two states have also been suspended.

There were also reports that protesters pulled over trucks with Tamil Nadu license plates, beating at least one driver.

Other than these two, the Karnataka capital is home to number of companies - Infosys, Wipro, Ola, Samsung, Oracle etc, few of which remain shut today while others advised their employees to leave early. Sporadic protests were witnessed in Mandya, Mysuru, Chitradurga, Ramanagra and other parts on Tuesday.
