Going into Tuesday's primary Clinton had a 21.5-point lead over Sanders in the state. The 2016 campaign season has been a wild ride, 155 Republican delegates up for grabs in Texas.

Vox reports that 12 states are holding primaries or caucuses today: Alabama, Georgia, Vermont, Virginia, Texas, Minnesota, Colorado, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Alaska.

Elections officials say turnout in Virginia's Republican presidential primary was substantially higher than it was in 2008, the last primary in which no incumbents were running.

Turnout was heavy through the late afternoon in Culpeper, located about 70 miles outside the nation's capital.

But other Republicans said they were casting votes specifically for candidates they thought had the best chance to beat Trump.

Culpeper is part of the congressional district where conservative Rep. David Brat defeated former House Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a June 2014 primary.
