Ted Cruz wins home state of Texas, Super Tuesday's biggest prize

He has prevailed in Georgia, Alabama, Massachusetts, Virginia, Arkansas and Tennessee.

The race had been too close to call since the polls closed across the state at 7 p.m.

Gearing up for a likely clash with Donald Trump for U.S. presidency, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton on Wednesday attacked the controversial Republican front-runner's campaign slogan of "Making America Great Again", saying the country never stopped being great. Ted Cruz used one of Donald Trump's favorite words to describe his victories in Texas and Oklahoma on Super Tuesday.

Clinton's rival Bernie Sanders, a democratic socialist USA senator from Vermont, also won his home state along with Colorado, Minnesota and Oklahoma and vowed to pursue the battle for the nomination in the 35 states that had yet to vote.

Here's a list of states voting in Super Tuesday.

There's a problem with a popular view among political pundits: that Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz need to stop splitting the GOP to stop Donald Trump.

After Super Tuesday, Mrs Clinton has at least 989 delegates overall, according to the Associated Press. Republicans voted in 11 states, with 595 delegates.

The strong GOP showings Tuesday follow record turnout in the first four contests: Republican turnout in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada was up 27 percent compared to 2012. But Trump has a lot of momentum, and it's going to be hard for any other candidate to beat him.

The Florida senator has cast himself as Republicans' best chance to win in a general election and has received a flood of endorsements from party officials after other more mainstream candidates dropped out.
