French Begin Dismantling Migrant Slum In Calais

A French court ruled on Thursday that the living spaces could be destroyed but not common spaces like mosques, schools and a library.

Those organisations claim that French authorities have vastly underestimated the numbers of refugees and migrants living in the southern part of the camp and the alternative options lined up for those evicted are insufficient.

French security forces on Monday began demolishing the "Jungle" camp in Calais, which is now home to about 4,000 people.

"We are carrying out our orders so that the migrants leave the camp and we will continue this work this morning...so that the destruction work can continue calmly and that the migrants are not under pressure from the No Borders activists", said local authority head Fabienne Buccio on Monday.

Thousands of migrants fleeing war and poverty, from Afghanistan to Syria, have converged on the northern port over the past year.
