Zika Virus: US investigates into 14 sexually transmitted cases

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that it's investigating 14 new cases where it appears the Zika virus has been sexually transmitted - worryingly, "several" of those cases involve pregnant women, according to the reports.

"Because of the possible association between Zika virus infections in pregnant women and certain birth defects, CDC recommends that pregnant women consider postponing travel to any area where Zika virus transmission is ongoing", ODH's website states.

"At this time, there is no evidence that women can transmit Zika virus to their sex partners; however, more research is needed to understand this issue".

Zika virus is primarily spread through mosquitoes.

CDC researchers also are investigating four probable cases of sexually transmitted Zika virus in non-traveling women. The CDC did not identify where in America the women live, though one appears to be from Hawaii, according to NBC.

A new alert from the CDC was released to serve as a "strong reminder" to the public the Zika virus can be be transmitted sexually and might "a more likely means of transmission for Zika virus than previously considered", the CDC said.

The CDC also advised South Korean men returning from any of the Zika-affected countries to avoid sex with their pregnant spouses throughout the entire gestation period or use contraceptives during sex.

Anyone, including students, traveling to areas with documented Zika virus transmission should take precautions against mosquito bites. There is now no cure or vaccine against the Zika virus. These cases show the virus was possibly transmitted through sex from a man to his sexual partner.
