One-year spaceman sees mission as a 'stepping-stone' for Mars

NASA's first and only yearlong spaceman will go through a series of physical and medical tests as soon as he returns from the International Space Station in a few days.

Since arriving at the space station on March, 27, 2015, Mr. Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Korneinko have served with eight different crewmates, unpacked six cargo ships, weathered two botched supply runs and participated in dozens of science experiments.

The study which is crucial for future missions to Mars hasn't been without its difficulty however, and Kelly does admit that while it's been "an incredible privilege, to be able to work for NASA and represent our country", it has been hard being away from friends and family.

While Kelly claims to be ready to return to solid ground, he has expressed that if he needed to, he could probably do another 100 days, or possibly even a year, according to USA Today.

But the idea must be put up a big performance - with the ball, of course; even more so with the bat. Wahab Riaz did, however, have an average day, but it could well have been an aberration.

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly points to his one-year mission patch, one of many representing his ISS expedition.

Scott Kelly and his twin brother Mark Kelly have taken part in a research carried out about the health impact of long duration space travel.

NASA TV will air briefings at 1 and 2 p.m., from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. By the time he lands in Kazakhstan next week, he will have spent 340 consecutive days in space, a US record.

"Physically, I feel pretty good", said Mr. Kelly, 52, a veteran of three previous space flights. Kelly, for instance, is bound to undergo rehabilitation in order to recover from the effects of his prolonged stay in zero gravity, such as bone and muscle loss and degraded vision.

Gatwick runway closed to all flights after spillage
Dozens of flights have been delayed after the runway at London's Gatwick Airport was closed due to an apparent oil spillage. Several flights due to land were circling the airport, which is located 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of London .

"We'll learn a lot about longer-duration spaceflight", Mr. Kelly said during a news conference on Thursday broadcast on NASA Television.

The NASA astronaut has been living at the International Space Station since last March.

"I could go another year if I had to".
