Orioles, Yovani Gallardo agree to three-year, $35 million deal

Yovani Gallardo agreed to a three-year, $35 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports. The signing of Gallardo will cost the Orioles their fourteenth-overall selection in this summer's amateur draft.

The deal also includes an option for a fourth year.

Gallardo does not ensure that everything will go right with the rotation, but you know what you're getting with him, which is a lot more than can be said for the other starters in Baltimore - Kevin Gausman, Miguel Gonzalez, Ubaldo Jimenez and Chris Tillman.

Last year, pitching for the Texas Rangers, he went 13-11 with a 3.42 ERA, but struggled in the second half, posting a 1.72 WHIP and lasting six innings just twice in 14 outings. Before the 2015 campaign, Gallardo was traded from the Milwaukee Brewers to Texas after spending the first eight seasons of his big league career there. Gallardo struck out at least 200 in four straight seasons from 2009-2012, with a 24.5-percent strikeout rate during that span. In the three years since, Gallardo averaged 137 strikeouts with a 17.2-percent strikeout rate from 2013-2015.
