Taylor Swift takes on Kanye West in Grammys marred by glitches

He won best rap album, rap performance, rap song, rap/sung performance and music video. The young African-American and Latino cast performed via a broadcast feed from NY and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda's varied score mixing pop, R&B and rap fit perfectly on the Grammy show.

Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, which administers the Grammys, said that the awards recognized excellence, regardless of chart performance, but that there was no contradiction in bestowing accolades on successful artists.

West has not yet responded to her acceptance speech.

The tributes to the deceased stars took several forms. Still, it was nice to see Stevie Wonder and vocal group Pentatonix doing an a cappella "That's the Way of the World". And most of the surviving Eagles paid tribute to their fallen guitarist/singer Glenn Frey with "Take It Easy", featuring Jackson Browne, who co-wrote that song with Frey.

Taking us on journey through the musical highlights of the late, great David Bowie's catalog, Lady Gaga gave a touching tribute to Ziggy Stardust that won't soon be forgotten. Still, it was a disappointment for her fans considering her many stellar live performances. A commercial immediately following the performance for a technology company involved in the production was a discordant note, too.

Alabama Shakes won the best rock performance with "Don't Wanna Fight", which was also named the best rock song. 

"Never even dreamed of this moment", said lead singer Brittany Howard.

Ed Sheeran got his second Grammy of the day when "Thinking out Loud" was named song of the year. "One of the best videos of all time!" Backed by Jack Antonoff on guitar, Swift sounded triumphant as she walked through the audience while glitter rained down inside the Staples Center.

"My heart was exploding", she said later.
